Question.
For you tomato growers. If you took an average of say 10 your tomato plants, how many quarts of tomato products would you say you get on average? I do mostly stewed tomatoes, but sometimes do juice or salsa also. I realize that depending on where you live the varieties etc.. would be different.
I typically use Park’s Whoppers and recently have put in some Big Beefs for a bit of variety. With our short growing season I always have a lot of tomatoes that get tossed because either they are still green or they get those spots on them, that we get in the fall where there is so much waste that it isn’t worth messing with them.
I typically plant 9-10 plants. They are staked on metal fence posts. I put red plastic down around the plants. Then put a 2 Lt. pop bottle buried next to each plant ( used like a funnel. Planted upside down. So the bottom of the bottle is cut off and the capped neck of the bottle has multiple small holes for water and fertilizer to go).
Anyway, depending on how warm our summers are etc... I get anywhere from 50-85 quarts of canned tomato products. No exaggeration. People are surprised when I tell them how I go about it, but the proof is on the shelves.
So I am wondering if any of you do anything to boost your tomato production?
