Jesus DID say to respect and adhere to the old laws.
in my Christian upbringing, we disregarded the OT and tried to live as Jesus suggested.
The OT is still in effect, except where Jesus specifically taught otherwise..those things were superceeded by the new covenant. It is easy for somebody talking from their "feelings; what is meant, but the OT/NT nexus is not entirely that simple !
For instance; the 10 commandments are still in effect..Aren't we expected to honor God as the only God! We should not take his name in vain.. Jesus never said it is OK to lie, steal, murder or commit adultery, did he?
Sure, some of the rituals and prohibitions are done away with, for instance in (Acts 11) where Peter is told that we need not observe OT prohibitions against certain foods etc.
The Bible explains itself, and with a close study it is not hard to discover which are and are not done away with. In fact, anyone attending a Bible centered church regularly, will have already learned this.
..But of course, this would not sit well with the armchair theologian, who is long on "feelings" and short on doctrine.
