Default Scope mount - 7/22 update

Trying to decide on a scope mount for my new 45/70 single shot. I see several options are available. I don't like the Weaver 82. Let's hear what you're using and how you like it...

All H&R scope bases will fit the Henry SS including the Weaver 82, but other than the Weaver they must be shortened at the rear by ~1/8" to clear the standing breech, the Weaver has less base between the rear mount hole and the end of the base. I used the Leupold 56515 on my 308 Win

Thanks for the pics. I see an interesting minor issue. My rear sight is going to have to be removed. It's much farther back than yours.

Maybe not if you use a short base like the Leupy.

Another interesting tidbit... the forearms are different. Hmmm

Another question. What scope? Looks like Quick has a 2-7x33. I have a Redfield Revolution (Leupold) 2-7x33. Considering a Leupold Freedom 1-4x20. Thoughts?

I found this old Weaver #82 I had. I cut it to length to not hit the sight and added a slot. I think the rings will be too close together. Likely will order a Leupold #56515.

Any of those scopes will work fine. The Weaver 82 for most users is a real poor excuse for a base, that flat spot, for whatever reason Weaver planned for it, is a real disappointment, that's where the rear ring should be placed! I've cut the flat spot off a few 82s and relocated the mount holes just to make use of them, additional cross slots cut with a carbide table saw blade, got them on barrels I bought. It's the most commonly available H&R base, it's too bad they screwed it up!

The shortened Leupy base on mine is 4.206" long, if that helps.

Thanks for the measurement. Mine is slightly shorter at 4-1/8". Guess I'll order the Leupy and shorten both ends or remove the sight.

My Leupold #56515 just arrived. Appearantly Henry figured out their error and moved the mounting holes forward. The Leupy mount bolts up with no mods needed!! I don't know if it's just the 45/70 but the rear sight has to be removed as it's further back than on Quick's earlier production 308.
