Default magic wood stove fan

you all have seen those little fans that sit on top of woodstoves. I have a walk out basement and I have a wood stove. I bought one of those fans and it does work, they don't move a lot of air but it moves some. I always thought that somehow heat rising up through those fins made the fan rotate. Well sort of, somehow that generates electricity and powers a small electric motor. The fan is actually powered by the electric motor. Well I am mystified how heat is somehow converted to electricity.

We bought one with the idea it would be good to have to circulate some heat if the power went out. I forget the brand. It was a smaller one, just one step up from the smallest one listed and it wasn't big enough to help much in our house (open floor plan of living room/kitchen). It worked fine, just wouldn't circulate enough air for that large of a space.

Thought about trying a bigger one, but they take quite a jump in price when you go any bigger than the one we had so we didn't get one.

They do work as advertised. The trick is to buy one that's big enough for the size of the space you want to circulate air in. The one we tried would probably work great in a small cabin or a smaller room in a house.

I see them all the time on wood stoves and have even looked them up on line some of the people on the show The Last Alaskan are using them but most of their cabins are very small I cant tell you how they work. maybe Agent 11 will chine in.

Don't have TV, but do live in a two room cabin with wood stove; what would they be called or what would the brand be.

Gene, the name of the gadget is Ecofan, ph. 1-800-567-3556 www.ecofan.com The hotter the stove gets the faster the fan goes. It doesn't create a breeze but I think it does move the air around some. It doesn't cost anything to operate, just heat.

Thanks much. We'll have to look into this. I've been using the over head fan, but it moves to much air even on the lowest setting.

Go too first link and look it over. Then go to the second link for an improved model. I still working on getting all the initial paarts as cheap (or free) as I can.

I may have passed my "Best Before" date but I haven't reached my "Use By" date.

They're available a lot of places. Here's some that Walmart carries. We bought ours from Cabela's, but they only carry a couple of models.

We got the "Original" model and it seemed too small for our needs. Check the specs to see what the CFM is - the original is 100 CFM and they go up from there.
