Default Stupid question of the week in the news

Was trump justified in using emergency powers for border security?

He ll yes, he's justified. There are serious problems at the border. Trump was elected to fix it.

The better question is why congress and the republicans were justified in not doing anything about the problem.

Many many years ago when I was a Freshman in College (and knew everything) I rejected a claim by a fellow student that the best form of government is a "Benevolent Dictator". Low these many years later I am inclined to agree, my problem is finding a dictator who remains benevolent once they have power...

As far as justification goes it depends on if you support the Constitution. If you do, you know the founders would be rolling over in their graves at the "President" having such power. There was great debate over whether to even have an Executive branch (President). If you support the notion that the President is really the CEO and government reports to them, then I guess you support "Emergency Powers". You would be very welcomed by the likes of Dick Cheney and his "unified executive" theory of the Presidency. Personally I like the separation of powers for the same reason I am hesitant to endorse a "benevolent dictator". Too easy to have the dictator remain long after the benevolence has evaporated.

The Constitution is VERY CLEAR the purse strings are CONTROLLED by the CONGRESS - NOT the President. The same is true of the declaration of war, another long forgotten responsibility of the Congress.

the President can send in the Marine Corps without a declaration of war from congress and does not need permission from anyone... Would you rather have that?

the president can use the national guard or coast guard but to use any other branch of the service on American soil martial law has to be declared. Is that something you would like to see in your state or town? Most of us would like less federal government control over our day to day life. Not a complete take over. Luckily for us that's a **** storm I doubt even President Trump is going to undertake. Bottom line is even the president has people to answer too. US!!! Hes not a dictator. Rember too one of the first things that happen with martial law is the disarming of civilians.

In 1976 Congress relinquished their power and made it possible (and legal) for the President to declare a state of emergency. So if anyone doesn't like the President declaring such then they should blame Congress, not the President.

It's another example of Congress not fulfilling it's responsibilities.

I believe there have been 32 states of emergencies declared since 1976, most still in effect. Where was all the "outrage" when those were declared?

If it were guarding the border against invasion then yes call in the marines... this is not martial law and has nothing to do with civilians unless a bunch of snowflakes thought they wanted to teach the marines a lesson. If congress would do its job these tactics would be unnecessary.
