Actually, they were used on "driven hunts". You went to your stand with a drilling, and the "drivers" could push anything from a pheasant to a deer or hog or ?, by you . With a drilling you was ready for what ever came through.
MANY moons ago, I went on this hunt miles and miles out in the bush, close to 200 miles from the nearest road. I took a decent moose with the rifle bbl. on my drilling,
and then I proceeded to jump shoot several ducks for supper after that! Some mid days, I would slide the insert bbl. in, go for a walk and shoot some grouse with the 22lr for supper. What's not to love?
