It's been quite a while since I've been on here, but I made it back home a few weeks ago. I wanted to share our deer hunt from Saturday. My dad, brother and I were hunting our family's farm, there was very little activity early in the morning with only one doe seen. As we were about to move to a new spot I saw a buck moving towards a big slough, we got into a position for a shot but he bedded down. I called him out of the slough and my brother took the shot, he was hit hard and dropped in some thick cat tails. We gave him a half hour and went to get him but he was a tough old buck and we bumped him, thankfully I found some blood and we were able to track him down for a finishing shot. Rifle was a Tikka CTR in 6.5 Creedmor.
We were shocked when we bumped him being that we watched him pile up but it looks like the bullet may have deflected at an angle as the shot was quartering towards us, it ended up hitting the guts after going through the shoulder. Bullet was a 143 grain eld-x.
Good job sticking with it. Those blood trailing experiences are some of the most anxious moments of the hunt. I have seen too many guys give it up early only to find the deer when the buzzards circle. Good job indeed!
Thanks for all the nice comments everyone, it was a memorable hunt for sure and a great reason to not give up on tracking. The buck looked hit hard, but I didn't find any blood until I found the bed we bumped him from. He didn't make it another 100 yards from that spot.
