There's gotta be a better way to spend 800 million dollars. If it was a private sector financing it then it wouldn't be bad but with the way the world is now sure seems a waste to me.
.
Well you see, 800 million is about 0.15% of the 5.6 trillion spent on the Iracq War and those cost are still growing, and I'm still wondering what the return was.

You're right, both are a total waste of money.

Or as Bill Nye put it "are you guys high?" Scientific missions to Mars are OK but any suggestion of commercial mining and colonization are ridiculous. What could you possibly mine that would be of such value per pound as to pay the freight bill? A manned mission to Mars would be a suicide mission. It's seven months each way and you can't just turn around and leave whenever you want but have to wait for the planetary orbits to realign so a manned mission would be committed to something over two years in space.
As Bill Nye points out, Antarctica is a vastly more hospitable environment than Mars but we aren't colonizing Antarctica.

The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

We will see true AI and Androids here on earth before we ever see any humans on Mars. That industry
would have a financial return where Mars wouldn't, not at first anyway.

CJ.....

Hard to say whate could be mined or extracted from Mars because we haven't been there yet.

Scientists are betting on a photon drive or an atomic drive coming along which will reduce travel time to Mars to dozen minutes or so. At its closest light from Mars can reach Earth in about 3.6 seconds.

Take note of the Mars One Project, which is an international association of many countries who's stated goal is to have man land on and eventually colonize Mars. I believe InSight is our contribution to Mars One.

Pulse Ion Drives are doable and a reality now. The trouble with them is slowing down and maneuvering which
would still take rockets to achieve. We still don't know just how fast they can go, the more of the tiny shoves the faster you will go. But it would still take a nuclear reactor to use them, and a lot of people are opposed to that.

Thank God, we've finally gone back! How long has that poor man been stranded on Mars? It's about time we finally sent a mission back to get him.

If it's the liberal actor who played Mark Watney he can just stay there. Matt Damon is as liberal as they come.
