Henned up toms?

How do ya all hunt henned up toms. Went out yesterday with my buddy and had a tom gobble at our calls, but he wouldn't come into our set up. Hen came in and just walked away. Tom walked away as well. Went out today and got set up. Put out two hen decoys and a jake decoy. Waited for fly down, but got no response at all. Did the fade away, but again no response. Left my decoy's sit and walked down and around the hill to the other side where the creek was and gave a few clucks and purr's. Nothing. Started raining so I figured I'd pick up my decoy's and head to the house. Came around the hill and gave a few clucks and tom started gobbling his head off. Got the decoys between me and the tom and tried to call him out but he wouldn't leave the thick brush or the hen that was cussing me every time I called. Should I wait until the hen is sitting on her nest before I hunt this tom again? What would ya all do?

Your decoy could be scaring them . Decoys seldom work on heavily pressured birds in my experience . Be patient , the hens will single out and nest and soon . And the ole boy will be easier to fool .

I don't get to go hunt 'em anymore,
but when I did if I came onto a tom
that already had the gals nearby, there
wasn't anything that could make him
leave the real live gals.
best to move elsewhere and find a lonesome
tom with no hens.
(maybe that's where the bird-in-the-hand
saying came from?. . . . .)

Re: Henned up toms?

Our season just opened Monday, but I figured the hens would be sitting on a few eggs by now. I know once they reach the limit on the eggs they want to lay they will leave the tom to tend to the nest. Guess I'll look else where for more receptive toms. Got a new permission to hunt on tomorrow and they were goobling like crazy there a week ago.
