Default Hearing Protection?

Hello folks,

Long time member, not often poster. Spend most of my timer over on the H&R/NEF forums.

Quick question: Does anyone here use an type of hearing protection when out bird hunting? Im concerned that I won't be able to hear the beeper collar going off with ear plugs in, but a little more concerned about going deaf.

On a good bird season, I will shoot 200+ rounds without ear plugs or muffs.

Any pointers?

Thanks,

Chad

Yea! What they said.
You can hear a cricket fart at 20 yards with them all the way turned up, but the report of the gun is almost nil.

I'll add a quick nod to elect.muffs. My son-in-law and I were shooting behind his house one day and I was wearing my elect muffs. While shooting I could hear my wife and daughter in the house talking and we were 50-70 ft away. So get them,Walker brand.Got my second pair at Bass Pro $46. I think on sale. Ck Amazon too.

+1 on Walker brand. Gotta protect your hearing.

When your grandchild looks up at you when you go "huh?" you will wish you had.

No kidding. My grandkids get aggravated at me when they have to talk loud so that I can hear them.

I can be in a place where it is dead silent yet it sounds like I am standing on a gravel road in July at sunset in Iowa. All I hear are crickets and locust 24/7.

I never used ear protection while shooting or hunting until it was too late. Nobody talked about it when I was young. I am at the point now that I have to rely on my dog to point the bird so I can see it flush as if the wind isn't in my favor then I don't here them flush. I too am going to look into the Walker muffs.

Good Grandpa!
Yes, we bring that up as well in our hunters safety class.
Thinking we might take a couple portable radios set to static and put it up the
ears of a volunteer to demonstrate what will happen if they don't follow the rules
and protect their G-d given senses.
