Default new rifle

I'm having a 45-70 rb built. My range is 100 yds. I told the smith I want the rifle to be 12-12.5 lbs. Is this too heavy? The breech right now is 1.25" and the muzzle is 1". I gave him a 1902 7mm smokeless action to build on. Thanks for any info.

hiram,

My Ruger No. 1 in .450 Marlin has a 29" barrel and weights in at 12 3/4 pounds complete. Accurate and a dream to shoot at that weight. Personally I think you are right on track. Heavier rifles kick less. Small groups and tight lines to you. Lawdog

Gary aka Lawdog is now deceased. He passed away on Jan. 12, 2006. RIP Lawdog. We miss you.

I think I'll sleep well tonight. The barrel is a Douglas premium and will be 28".
