Default Shooting my 30-30 contender 23" rifle

Really appreciate this caliber.
Been plinking around a bits with it.
Got to try some 125s gr.
Thinking I need a G2 with a Monte Carlo stock.
Anyhow, just enjoying the day. It was fun.

I had a H&R 30-30 that was great with the Sierra 125gr SP. Give them a try.

I am relatively new to the 30-30AI but I really like it. Recently worked up to 41.0 grains of Lever evolution powder under the Speer 150 gr. Flat nose for 2550 fps. The case holds right at 4 grains more than the standard 30-30 and the straight case makes for much less case head thrust and case stretching is almost eliminated after the first shot. I typically work up to no more than three grains higher than standard 30-30 loads but that is just because I am being careful. In my rifle the 150 gr. SST is a real shooter and expands quickly at 30-30AI velocities. My needs could have been easily handled by the stock 30-30 but due to a happy accident the used barrel I bought off this forum had been chambered for the AI version.

Peabody, my go-to ammo for my 23" 30/30 Contender carbine is a handload of 32 grains of IMR4064 under a 150 grain Hornady Interlock bullet that leaves the muzzle at about 2325 ft/sec. I shot at a running coyote about 300 yds away and had a mental thought of " this is only a 30/30" and raised my reticle a little more and shot right over his back. This made me like and respect this little gun and cartitridge.

There is a great article about the 30-30 in a Contender Carbine at theolddeerhunters.com. He lists a load of 31.5gr of Reloader 7 behind a 125gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. Out of a 23” barrel it gets 2600fps at the muzzle. I have loaded some and shot them, accurate load, but haven’t scored with it yet.

I have a 7x30W in a 23” carbine. Fun to deer hunt with. Easy because it is light. Have 14” pistol barrel in same caliber. Often shoot it left handed off sand bags from a ground blind.
