That should be a lot of fun to shoot - and a good woods deer cartridge if you want to hunt with it.
I think having a barrel chambered and bored is the best way to go with a .38-55. That way you can get it done to the specs you want. The chamber/bore specs seem to be all over the place on factory chambered rifles. I never could understand why there was no real "standard" for this cartridge.
