Default shooting a round ball in a 30-30

Have any of you gents ever loaded and 32 cal (.311) round balls in 30-30 brass. I was cleaning out my tubs and found a coffee can full of those round balls. I think a little Unique or Trail Boss might turn my 30-30 into a squirrel rifle! A 42 grain round ball at around 1k fps would be fun.

Just wondered if we had any been there and done that folk around!

Thanks GPA

I have in .30-40 Krag and in .308. It's been a long time and I don't remember how accurate it was, but I used 5 gr of Unique (the old one, not the new stuff).

My old dead buddy Butch used to shoot .311 round balls in a 30 Carbine. and .380 round balls out of his 375 Winchester and they were deadly. When he died I got all of his reloading stuff. I can read writing but his writing was written rotten so I am having a hard time decyphering his notes. I'm gonna play with it in my 336 30-30 just for kicks.

5 grains of Unique was a mainstay with round balls in my uncle's 30/30 for small game when I was a kid. Snowshoe hares were in season year round.

sam fadala had an article in one of my gun/hunting
magazines some time back about that very thing
(part of a larger article- not solely about rb in 30/30)
he used those on extended hunting/primitive campouts

never tried it myself, but i don't see why it wouldn't
work just fine

I was just telling one of my friends about doing this and he said, "Why in the heck would you want to do that?" I had to laugh. I have fiddle farted around with about everything there is to do with shooting and then something else comes up that interests me. I love my blued steel and walnut guns and am partial to my old JM Marlin lever guns. I think hunting skirls with my 30-30 would be a hoot. Besides there is nothing fit to watch on TV so I get to be creative in another shooting adventure. It might even make a good cat load. The world is full of ditch tigers......

Thanks for your replies guys!

In circa 1990, I reloaded 30-30 with a Lee loader. slow but fun.
Anyway, when I bought my Lee loader I also picked up a bag of OO buckshot and used those to plink dirt clods on the range berm.
They are illegal to hunt small game with here in Georgia.

Roundballs are a hoot in a 30-30.

Round ball sized to .310 and 2.5 grains of Herco shoots to sights out to about 25 yards in a Model 94 trapper. I can practice in the basement without bothering the neighbors, and don't have to adjust my sights. Sometimes you get lucky regulating. +1 with Bugeye; they are a hoot to shoot. Wish we could hunt with them here in Georgia.

I shot artic hare near Fairbanks Alaska 45 years ago or so with a round ball from a .45-70 at about 75 yards. Was from an H&R Shakari.
We originally shot round balls from a .43 Spanish Rolling Block. Always used 5 gr. of Unique for the propellent.
