Default Fired shotshell length? Shortest?

I have a 1887 lever shotgun that does not like to eject shells that are long. Would anyone know what brand shell is the shortest length after firing? I could just measure the empties at the range, if I could go to the range under these stay at home rules.

Have you measured the chamber for that 1887? Do you have a measurement for a hull that you know will eject from your gun?
Perhaps what you need for that gun are 2.5 inch hulls......that was a common length for shotguns of that era.
In fact...shooting the longer 2 3/4 hulls is dangerous as there is no room in the chamber for the crimp to unfold.

Darkgael is right on the mark with his information. The only thing left to mention is that shotgun shell lengths are measured as the length of the unloaded shell. a 3" shell is only 3'' after it's fired. A 2 3/4" is only 2 3/4" after firing, etc.

That said, as Darkgael stated, you may well be shooting a 2.5" chambered gun. It may be stamped on the side of the barrel as to exactly what size chamber it has.
