I grew up with certain food for certain special days.
Now that there are really no more family and friends dinners, with a pretty set menu, I miss that regime even more.
I can now understand why those from other regions were a bit dismayed they could not get what they grew up with, but in the good old U.S. of A., that can has been fixed usually.

I grew up eating hominy grits in Illinois.
My Mom made a loaf of it with bacon grease, and then sliced it and fried it and poured on the cane syrup.

Then I moved to Georgia, and some down here eat real hominy grits, and some eat corn meal mush and call it grits.

I could use a trip to waffle house for grits and over easy eggs. Mmmmm!!

Will be having corned beef and cabbage with little chopped taters in with the cabbage. In all probability a glass of scotch to wash it down!

I have been trying to think of anything we up North here have that is a staple food like your South boys Grits.
Out side of hot dish, there ain't no such thing, and hot dish can be what ever is thrown together and baked.

Maybe bacon and eggs, but that is as close as we get.

I'm not southern to hear the southerners say it. after being in the south for 50 years I'm still called a Yankee. (from Illinois)
But I was eating grits starting in 1943 so the southern boys don't have a lock on them.
My Grandma made several crocks of hominy every year and a lot of it was dried and ground up for grits.
