Ironfire's Twisted Sister. Always though my last pup would be a GSP but Stormy changed my mind. Got this little girl from Ironfire setter's in St Cloud, Minn this past Friday. Went back to pick her up. Call name is Sis.
I whelped, raised and trained GSPs for 30 years and they will always be my go to dog because I understand the temperament. However that being said, I have hunted along side most breeds of bird dogs and firmly believe that the owner makes the dog. If you put your time in with that little gal she will be as special to you as any of my shorthairs are to me. She will also be able to got tit for tat with them in the field and that is not something that will spew from the lips of every Shorthair owner/breeder......only the honest ones!
She sure is a purdy little thing! There is nothing prettier than an Irish Setter on point with the wind blowing the hair on that cocked and locked tail.
She is my second Red. The only thing they have in common with Irish Setter's of AKC is color! Put them side by side and the difference will blow your mind. Turn them loose in the field together and the Red will absolutely destroy the AKC Irish. Bad thing is AF calls the Red an Irish Setter too! Anyone ask's me I always correct them. I stumbled into Stormy by judging an Irish Walking Shooting Dog stake in Wash about 6 yrs ago. My first look at the Red Setter was Stormy's mom and dad. Mom blew away the field as bad as I've ever seen, nothing in her class! See if I can find a few photo's of them.

How cool is that. I've owned 3 English setters and have seen plenty of Irish setters, but have never heard of a Red. Beautiful dogs!!! I'll have to Google Red setters and learn some more. Thanks again for sharing.
It's news to me also but I understand very well. AKC is about money and not keeping bloodlines pure. That is going on with more and more breeds. My son has a Deutsch Drahthaar that was Dog of the year in the VDD-GNA Midwest/North Chapter. She won top honors for the spring VJP testing when she was a year old. She is three now and has had hundreds of pheasants and ducks killed over her. If someone calls her a German Wire Haired Pointer then my son is real quick in correcting them. The Drahts are registered in Germany and the AKC is not going to get a chance to screw up their pure bloodlines! I imagine the Red is much the same.
My 3 year old male Roy is a big block headed Moesgaard from my own lineage. He's a good en and has also had hundreds of birds killed over him. I refer to my 8 month old female as a GSP when I shouldn't, she is actually a Deutsch Kurzhaar which is the same as a shorthair with all of the registering being done in Germany so as to stay out of the fingers of the AKC. She has all the makings of a good bird dog.....if I don't screw it up! Ha!
All that being said, there are still good breeders amongst the normal Shorthairs, Wirehairs and Setters too. However there are some guys that take advantage of the weak points of the AKC and screw up good bloodlines. One just has to be very judicial in where he gets an AKC registered dog.....or stay away from AKC stuff all together!
Over the years I've had beagles, raised and trained bird dogs (pointers), but my years training German Shepherd Patrol dogs were my best.
Used'em daily on patrol they were full service dogs, and competed in a five state area making the Nationals in Ft. Lauderdale in 1992 with The United States Police K-9 Association.
My dog of choice now is a 5 year old Blue Heeler with a 1/8 Border Collie bred in.
I got him off a workin ranch in Idaho a day after he was weaned, and sadly he's smarter than me.
Since I've retired, if I'm outside he's with me, but damm I liked that puppy breath when they were babies.😊
Heidi will be 3 in August and loves everyone except brown dogs (deer) and droopy drawers. She wiggles and pees whenever any stranger approaches her, except the droopy drawers. She got stomped pretty good by a big doe with fawns as a pup. She runs and plays with fawns now, but if their not spotted, look out. Amazing how smart she is. I don't know where she learned such hatred for the droopy drawers.:tango_face_wink:
Boy, that is one cute pup. If you hadn't said she was a Red, I'd have sworn she was a Golden. Looks just like my Golden from some years ago. Smartest dog I ever owned (and stubbornest too). I still miss him from time to time.
Well me and ole Rufus put a top on the mule today. Cut it down to size from an old pickup bed cover a neighbor gave me.
I worked and rufus laid in the floor and supervised.
Course when it was time for a test drive hes ready to go.
I love seeing all the dog pictures. These are my labs on a hike this summer. They are both excited for our resident goose season which starts next week.
I love seeing dog picture's too. even if their mix breeds. it's not a mutts fault it's a mutt and a mutt is just as good a friend as any!
