I saw a 357 barrel some one had re-chambered to a 35 wheelen and called it pocket dynamite , probably a true statement.
I agree that 308 would be dangerous pressure wise, but it will not even be close to the rear sight holes. The 45/70 is larger in diameter and is chambered in Contenders.

The 45-70 has a SAAMI MAP of only 28kpsi compared to 62kpsi for the 308Win.

JDJ's get a little closer to the hairy edge.
and the 375 win is an anomaly all on it's own

Dang, got my curiosity up now.

Silentshooter, can you do some measuring on your fired case and compare to those case specs noskmr and carlflh posted?

I think El Bango guessed it.
A 30-30 Ackley case would closely resemble a .308 Win. case to the naked eye.
... except for the obvious rim!
My vote goes to El Bango on this mystery.

I see that the OP says the item has been "disposed of". I hope he didnt toss it in the trash or something. Sounds like he has a 30-30 AI. That can be a good thing!
