"One last thing, want a challenge? Try drilling a straight hole through three pieces of white oak, all at different attitudes, and there is a 4" gap between two of the three pieces. The re-entry surface is at a 45 deg. angle. How would YOU do that?"

I'd use some kinda thingama - JIG.

With the accuracy required, I'm quite sure you guys are using one (unless you've got a [glow=red,2,300]laser drill[/glow]).

Thank you Douglas!! Now some of the members who weren't with us 10 years ago can see how the Paixhans Monster Mortar was made. I recall that a pound of cannon grade BP shot the water cooler jug filled with concrete out to 200 yards and 1.5 pounds boosted them out to 400 and 2 Lbs. blasted them to 500 yards. I will look around for some pics or videos of the Montana Shoot, but it will take a while. We sure did have fun building that beast, but ever after Mike would say to me frequently, "Think smaller, Tracy, think smaller!"

I don't suppose you have the pictures and videos of the firing still around? Looks like they got lost to time in the thread.

It could easily have happened, beowulf_grendel. I will continue to look for those pics and vids. I noticed Mike circling the lathe earlier; turning could start on the 10 In. 18 Ton Tubes today. We are completely snowed in and going out for lunch is impossible. 12 to 18 is predicted and we have about 8" so far and it is still snowing. We should have a few turning videos and pics for you guys on the Woolwich Gun thread by Thanksgiving day.

I have 21 mostly short videos of the Shoot on this computer though not all are of the Monster Mortar. Since they are so short, I have not done any editing. Here is one:

Can post more if there is interest. So these are the rest of the Monster Mortar videos:

Thanks! That is really impressive. I guess with a projectile that size, it's pretty easy to visually track it's progress across the sky.

GGaskill, Mike and I would certainly appreciate your posting a few more of those video clips you have. Maybe another of the Monster and some with different content would be nice, perhaps your bowling ball mortar? Thanks.

Say George, I get a 404 error on those video clips that you added to post 196.

Thanks,
