Has anyone tried floating or bedding the forearm on a #1? my 270 will shoot the first two shots almost into one hole then the third will go wild- up down right left ??? my local gunsmith claims that bedding/floating the forearm will solve the problem any input ? Thanks

Floating and bedding Ruger #1 fore end

:grin: Yep, been there and done that as the saying goes. If you are handy with Acraglas (red & blue box NOT!! the green and blue), it is doable at home. Just make sure you always have ALL of your ducks in a row BEFORE you mix the resin.

Once the bedding is done, the rest of the forend can be floated after which the only wood/barrel contact will be few points such as the end of the underbarrel hanger, the bottom of the adjusting screw block (adjustment screw for extractor/ejector) etc., plus a possible band of glass under the barrel just ahead of the hanger.

Worked for me. Had some photographs around at one time, possible???? that they could be found and sent your way if you were interested and IF they could be found.

Good luck and DON'T let that glass get in the wrong places!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have found one of the best cures for a #1 forearm is the simple business card shim of the foretip. Seems most #1's want a little positive upward pressure at the tip.

the #1 can drive you nuts!...I have seen the symptons here that i have fought in the past..my first #1 was a 1-A in 06..same thing 2 touching and a flier...i worked the forend over and it went from 1 1/2" groups to 5/8"...you can work wonders when you hit the right key.. have several others I am going to work on...I have an artical that was printed soon after I bought my first #1, and that is what I went by and it worked.....if I were a better typer, I would type it for you...anyway dont give up on your #1 as they can be sweet shooters, even the new ones if you put an after market trigger such as the Moyer's from Brownells.. hope this helps some.....Rob

hahahaha forgot one thing...have never had one of mine need the shims under the forend, they have done better free floated...but my brother has a mod 77 in 06 and 7MM Mag...the 06 shoots tight groups free floated and goes bad with pressure...his 7MM will not shoot at all without the pressure....go figgure...wish Ruger would change their stock screws to instead of angle, go straigh in like most others....enough.....Rob..

I've improved accuracy with two #1's by putting a piece of inner tube rubber under the forearm screw. You're then putting more gentle pressure on the fore arm.

This takes a couple of minutes, and costs very little.

This was recommended by Elmer Keith in a Gun Notes column shortly after the #1's were introduced.
