What do you guys feel about a 7-08 in a 10" barrel? Am I asking for trouble? Would the 15" be a better choice in this caliber? I like the 10" just for ease of carrying it around, but I feel I am robbing this caliber with such a short barrel. Thanks
i was just reading yesterday in a nosler manual that the longer barrel was a better option. Increased velocity /better powder burn. :? I think it is personal preference. Lets face it, how many fps would you really loose and would it make that much difference. I like the longer barrel myself but I bet it doesn't matter a whole lot.
i've got a 15" 7-08 and like it alot. the 10" would be a good packer, but with that much horsepower, i want to get the velocity of the 15". there are better calibers suited for the shorter 10" barrels in my opinion. i'd think muzzle blast would be horrendous with the 10". go 15" and learn to find or make shooting rests in the field. the 15" isn't bad packin with a sling setup. just my opinions 8)
While it was not a 10", I did do the load development for a buddies 12" Encore in 7mm-08. This was a Stainless-Steel Fox Ridge Outfitters Barrel that also had been Mag-na-Ported with 4 Ports. I mainly worked with 120gr. & 140gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips and H-4895 Powder.
While I came up with some really accurate loads in the 12" Barrel, the velocity left something to be desired. I was able to get 2395FPS with the 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips, and 2300 FPS with the 140gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips in this 12" Barrel. (or about the same velocity or a little less than can be expected from a 14" 7-30 Waters Contender)
The Muzzle Blast & Flash produced by the 12" 7mm-08 was a sight to behold, and the Recoil was quite a handful. Granted it was not uncomfortable to shoot, but it was considerablly more than expected. In fact the 10" Contender in 7-30 Waters that I worked with was much more pleasant to shoot in terms of both Muzzle Blast & Flash and Recoil. In addition the velocity of the 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip in the 10" 7-30 Waters was not all that far behind the 12" 7mm-08 Encore (2258 FPS for the 10" 7-30 Waters vs 2395 FPS for the 12" 7mm-08 both with 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips).
While I have not tested this, I would think that in this short of a barrel the 7mm BR would provide almost the same ballistics as a 7mm-08. Granted this is just my opinion, and not something I have actually tested.
I had one for about a month, accuracy was ok but the recoil and noise was almost unbearable. I bought it for hunting but decided i didnt want to wear muffs while hunting. My ears were ringing for a while. I got a 44mag 10inch now with a red dot. Works great for those big Maine bucks and bears....
