Came home with the new H&R Sportster in HMR 17.

Ordered the new Mil-Dot 4-16 Meuller 4-16 from The Optic Zone.

Still looking for Weaver extension mounts ( have 36 inch sleeve and creep up besides.)

Is it Christmas?

You will love it. Mine seems to shoot the Federals slightly better than the others. Have fun. It's nice to have Christmas in June.

have fun tinkering w/it. mine was doing 2.5-3" groups at 100yds and i did all the tinkering tricks (except lightened trigger). then quickdtoo mentioned to clean up the crown. glad i did because there was a very small burr and the ball bearing and lapping compund cleaned it all up. now i just need to hit the range for final testing.
good luck! you may have a "NO TOUCH DO NOTHING" winner right out of the box but be prepared to mess around.

I haven't had this much fun with a rifle in a long time :-D .

I've put about four hundred rounds through it. :!:

Accuracy is improving- I can count on 2" groups at 100 yards with federal V-Shoks.

Now I have to start fooling with it to get to the expected 1 1/4". :?

Maybe I should try the Hornadys again now that I've got more rounds through it. They were not good at the start.

Perhaps I should check the crown?

What are successful shooters doing with this rifle and free-floating the forearm?

Today, in the dead-still morning air, from a solid rest, I was trying to shoot empty 20 gauge hulls off the 100 yard rail. Got a few, too! :-D :-D :-D

Do a trigger job on it, get it down around 2lbs. Raynor's trigger hone info can be found in a sticky in the Misc H&R talk forum and Perklo's link is in the NEF/H&R Centerfire forum FAQ.

Try an O ring on the forend stud, info in FAQ.

Place the front rest under the hinge just ahead of the trigger guard.

When you squeeze the trigger, pull it all the way to the rear, the transfer bar requires follow thru with the trigger pull to get consistent impact on the firing pin.

Try all the ammo available, one will usually shine above the rest.

Below is a list of available ammo, compliments of Ice....

These tips should get you 1" or smaller groups at 100yds with the right ammo.

Your local hardware store, Ace and TrueValue both have O rings in their bolt/nut section as well as in their plumbing section. I'd choose an assortment of those in different thickness that will fit snug over the forend stud, 3/8" ID or a bit smaller by 1/16"-1/8" thick or so, the synthetic forend takes a thinner O ring than the wood stocks. Some grommets work, too.

i cannot think of the company who makes quality .17 ammo. But i think SHooting Gallery on Outdoor channel got a tour through the factory. The distinguishing thing about the ammo is a blue tip, any one know them?

Eley makes 17M2 ammo with a blue tip, but not 17hmr ammo........yet. CCI is the only producer of 17hmr ammo so far, their plant in Idaho makes the 17M2 and 17Hmr ammo for everyone but Eley. Remington's 17M2 ammo uses Eley priming, also. From reports at RFC, the Eley 17M2 ammo is not worth the extra bucks, apparently they haven't put the effort in the M2 ammo that they do for the premium .22 ammo, to the dismay of many RFCers.

Yup!!! And all the plastic tipped bullets are made by Hornady, regardless of tip color, just different names for the V-max.

Marketing!! If you read the history of the 17hmr development, you'll see the big picture. CCI is the only mfr that has invested the time and money in producing the tiny cartridges along with Hornady's investment in R&D and time in the bullets. The only bullets made for the .17hmr are made by Hornady and CCI/Speer(ATK/Alliant). The V-max, XTP/Gamepoint and the Speer(ATK/CCI) TNT HP...there is also a new CCI 20gr FMJ, don't know who makes the bullet, but probably Speer.

so are you saying that Hornady, Rem. ect are making Bullets but CCI puts them together? What about HM2? Now im likely getting a Sportster tomorrow(B-day HOOAH!) at Gander and i've seen one of each at least. More choices the one i'll get.

Hornady and CCI(Speer) make the bullets, CCI makes the brass and puts it all together and is sold as Hornady, Rem, CCI, Federal and Winchester with different colored tips in the Vmax or using the Hornady XTP(Gamepoint) or the Speer/TNT Hp. Same for the 17M2 with the exception that Eley may be, don't know that for sure 100% though, is making their own M2 ammo, using the Vmax bullet with a blue tip.
