Post subject: 17 HMR in the contender

I have been shooting it for a month or so. I get three shot groups at 100 yds that I can cover with a dime. I have shot it at 200 yds and have gotten groups of 2 inches or less. Like you said it is fun to shoot. I know other then targets it is limited but I am planning to see what the crows think of it real soon. All in all I am very satisfied.

I have one in a 14", Every group, except the ones I screwed up, were under an inch. Best 4 were .7" , .65" , .45" , and .25" at 100 meters. This new cartrige is great! I read that Remmington and CCI are going to manufacture 17 ammo, that should help bring the price down. KN

I bought into the hype about the 17HMR an bought a 14" TC barrel for my Contender. I took it Prairie Dog shooting in SD last September. It is very accurate and almost no recoil. I popped about 40 to 50 PD's with it from 20 yards to 150 yards. It killed them and left little gut piles next to them.....BUT the round lacked any entertainment value. This means NO air time by the PD's or any flipping or spinning or helicoptering by the shot varmint. There is much better entertainment value in a 221FB, 222 or 223 from a 14" Contender (the 17HMR is about equal to a 22 Hornet). However it will kill what you are shooting at. If you are a fur hunter then this might be for you. Just my 2 cents.

Not!!!

Last post says .17 equel to hornet. Not! Thats like saying 30-30 equel to .300 Win mag

Hornet with 40 grain v-max, 1/2 grain under max chrono's at 2925 vs .17 hmr only 17 grain, also v-max, 2525 out of my rifle. Trajectory, energy not even in the ballpark of each other. 17 is fun but don't insult the Hornet and yes, I have both!

I'll agree, maybe around the 17 Squirrel or 17CCM would be a better/closer comparison to the little 17HMR than the 22 Hornet is. BTW JM, I totally "insult" my 22 Hornets all the time when I shoot either of my two 17 Ackley Hornets.
