I have used the 22Mag for coyotes but only close ditances when IO am hunting in populated areas. I have found it to be effective under 75 yds. I would not however venture a shot any longer for fear of under-penetration. I also use no smaller than 40gr HP's and prefer 50's. Good luck. 8) Chad

22 mag under 100yds with ( CCI TNT hollow points!). Shot placement is required. Over 100 yds use something else!

I agree with vhunter. The CCI TNT hollow point is the only round I'd use on coyotes. The expansion on this bullet is unbelievable.

Anyone know what the bullet weight is on CCI`s ? They don`t list it on the packagaing anymore (that I can see at least) and I want a reference based on its` performance versus the other loads I shoot with my .22 wmr. The CCI TNT Hollow Point is the round I am interested in. Thanks!

22 wmr for coyotes

I called in my first coyote last Thursday. He came in from about 150 yds out and I took the shot at under 50 yds with my TC Contender Carbine 16" 22 WMR. I was hiding behind some brush. I was holding just behind the shoulder and it was a broadside shot. He jumped up at the shot, bit at the wound and took off across the field and made it into the woods. It was 5:30 PM when I shot and didn't locate him before dark, so I took the next afternoon off to search for him. No blood trail at all. Never recovered him. I was positive I hit him and expected to find him dead but the lack of a blood trail made it tough. Do coyotes bleed? :?

Gregory,
You got to poke a hole through them to make them bleed. I don't think a 22 mag has enough to go through the front end of a dog. I hit one with a 54 cal. muzzeloader a few weeks ago right through both lungs and it still ran 75--100 yds. coyotes are tough critters and you may want to go to a bigger gun. (223 being minimin cal. in my opinion).
The 54 cal. left a blood trail that a blind man could follow so yes ,coyotes do bleed.

I used the WW 40 gr JHP load 22 Mag. I'm hunting a conservation area that says "22 rifles", shotguns, or muzzleloaders. I put my 16" 223 barrel on my TC so in my mind I'm still legal with a "22".

Legal?

If the rules say "22 rifles" they will be interpreted to mean rimfire rifles. Why risk having your gun, and car, confiscated?

If you're not sure if your .223 is legal, call the game department and ask.

Re .22 WMR on coyote, buy a premium line of ammo with good bullets and try to avoid the near-side shoulder on chest shots. Keep your range within 100 yards. The yotes will run (just as a lung-shot deer runs) but should drop within 50 to 100 yards.

:cb2: You've got the PERFECT gun for coyotes. But it isn't your .22 mag.--it's your .243. Some guys will tell you they've killed hundreds of coyotes with a .22 or .22 mag, and next I expect some of them to claim they've killed them with a rubber band gun at 50 yards, but for heaven's sake use enough gun to kill them properly. Use a small Ballistic Tip on the .243 and you'll kill them quickly without damaging the hide.[/i]

22 wmr for coyotes

I have a .223 and some larger calibers but I want to use my .22 Mag for eastern coyotes. I was going to ask which bullet is best for coyotes, the solid or Hollow point but it seems the consensus is hollow point. My gun regularly shoots into a 1.5" group at 100 yards with 40 grain HP CCI Maxi Mags, and better with the Winchester black box. I plan to hold my shots to under 100 yards, some as close to 20 yards, average about 45-50 yards and was thinking of head shots with solids. Do you expierenced with .22 Mags on coyotes still think the hollow points are better for head shots also? Which bullet do you prefer as an all around .22 Mag for coyotes under 100 yards? What about the 50 grain bullets that were mentioned, who makes them and do they come in hollow points? I tried the CCI Maxi-Mag+'s (34 grain Hollow points) accuracy was OK for hunting, about 3" higher and a bit left than the regular 40 grain Maxi-Mags at 100 yards, I would think within 50 yards the added velocity in such a small diameter bullet might help....<><....

22 wmr for coyotes

A couple of years ago I was in my backyard and saw 2 coyotes coming across the plowed field behind my house. I ran into the house and grabbed my Savage/Anschutz 22mag. Ran to the edge of my property just in time to see the 2 coyotes crossing the field right next to my land. They were about 75 yds out and walking fast. I ran to the edge of my property (tree line) and took sight on the lead dog and squeezed one off. The coyote did a total flip in the air and took off running. He stumbled a few times BUT NEVER broke his stride. He and the other dog put it in high gear and I never saw them again. I went and tried to find a blood trail but nothing. I followed them in the direction they went...but nothing. I know it was a good shot as my 22 mag will put them all in a nickel at 100 yards. Unfortunately, this time, the 22 mag was not enough gun. I have since purchased a .223 NEF that I used for coyotes. It too is a great shooter.

coyotes

k fellers, let me tell yu jus how tuff the local yotes are here in mo. last deer season i shot one at bout 200 yrds with 06 125 grn handload doing near or better than 3000fps, perfect shot, right in crease behind shoulder perfectly middle of body up and down wise. knoncked him flatter than a pancake. dint think much of it, 10 min later i looked up and he was trottin roun like nuttin ever happened, big red spot on him exactly where i aimed! i watched him trot aroun for a few more min thru my 4x12 bsa scope. he dint even look like he had a bellyache or a hangnail. finally he was sniffin roun and turned towards me at bout 180yrds, he got same load center of chest. that one did it for him, never even exited. when i looked at him, first shot left a 3 finger gash on exit with chunks of lung hangin out but he never even acted like he knew it. moral of this story? 2 days later, shot one in same place with 243 100 grain factory load. ded dog immediate. lol figger that out! oh 22 mag mite be good for head shots and lung shots if yu dont mind trackin a little but give me a 243 anyday!
