hey everybody! im brand new here to this forum but it looks really nice!! i have been thinking about getting a browning a-bolt medallion with the BOSS in 25 wssm as a deer, hog, maybe prairie dogs, and coyote rifle. i was reading an old thread just a minute ago about the 25 wssm. i saw that LawDog's daughter in law shot a nice buck at 260 yards with a 25 wssm and it dropped on the spot. i was wondering maybe if lawdog reads this if you know if the bullet she used was the factory winchester brand ammo or was it a handload that she shot the big buck with? if she was using the factory winchester ammo what bullet type and weight was she using when she shot the monster. if she was using hand loads then which factory wichester load in 25 wssm should i use if im gonna be deer hunting where my shots would be a maximum of 300 yards? should i use the 115 grain ballistic silvertip or the 120 grain positive expanding point ammo?? also i was wondering (from peoples hunting experiences) what is the farthest range that the 25 wssm (in either 2 of the factory load weights)will pass all the way through a deer and exit the other side on a good broadside shot behind the shoulder?? any info appreciated and thanks to everybody in advance!!

I was reading about a feeding problem with a Browning A-Bolt II .243 wssm on the bolt action rifles discussion. I don't know if it will be the same with the 25 wssm, but you might want to take a look at it before buying anything.

25 WSSM

I've had the Browning Hunter A-Bolt II in 25 WSSM since last August and have not had any problems at all with feeding. I've put over 100 rounds through it with no probs at all.

25 WSSM

Sure, I was shooting the Sierra 117 gr Game King behind 37.5 of Varget. Don't know the speed, but they were accurate. I took one deer and my son took another with it. These were taken at 110 yards and both were neck shots. Dropped and were DRT......

The load my daughter in-law(and I) used is a 100 gr. Barnes TSX ahead of 41.5 gr. of H4895 for 3,268 fps. Very accurate out of our M70 Coyotes. Can’t comment on the factory loads, haven’t fired any yet. Lawdog

thanks Lawdog!! do you think that the same barnes load with that powder will shoot about the same and as accurate out of my a-bolt? i know that the coyote and the medallion have the same barrel twist rate 1:10 and the only difference is is that the a-bolt medallion has a 22 inch barrel and the coyote has a 24 inch barrel. does the type of primer really matter? even if it does or doesnt what kind did you use?? thanks!!

It may or it may not. Each rifle is different even if they are the same make/model. My daughter in-laws Coyote gets a bit better accuracy with this load(0.72" average). It is accurate in mine(0.92" average) but I am still doing load work trying to find the best accuracy. Will this load be accurate in your rifle only trying it will tell. I will say this it should be a good starting point to work from. One thing the Browning A-Bolt Medallion has a sporter weight barrel and the M70 Coyote has a medium-heavy weight barrel. As far as primers goes I normally use CCI or if I am out and can’t get CCI then I use Federal. Some swear by Remington primers, others only use Winchester brand. It boils down to what the individual loader likes. Use what works for you. Lawdog

thanks Lawdog!! i was thinking about it and i dont think that the accuracy of that load wouldnt really matter in my medallion since the gun is going to have the BOSS on it so i can just tune it to that certain load. would it matter or can the boss tune it to that bullet?? also i was wondering from other a-bolt owners whose a-bolts are in 25 wssm with this load that im going to use (the 100 grain tsx) how deep should i seat the bullet in the casing?? thanks for any help!!

rimfirekid1022,

I have a a-bolt stainless stalker in 25 wssm and with the help from Lawdog, I worked up a good load with the 100 gr tsx. As far as seating depth with your a-bolt you are kind of limited because of the magazine. What I did with mine is I kept seating the bullet until my bolt closed. I then seated it about .030 deeper. The problem that I ran into is that the maximum cartridge length for the 25 wssm is 2.36" and my load was 2.370". What I did was I filed out the front of my magazine until my bullet fit and loaded fine. I was very careful not to remove too much material from the magazine. Now you might not have to go that route as Lawdog said no two rifles are the same. My brother also has a a-bolt in 25 wssm and my load will not chamber in his rifle. I hope you have as good of luck with this bullet as I have had. My 3-shot group measured 1/2" at 100yd. So far I have shot a 140 sow and 1 small buck with this load. The sow was about 150yds away and I shot her through both shoulders and she went right down. The bullet went clean through ,entered bore size exited hole was about the size of a quarter. The buck was 100yds and I shot it in the neck. I hope I didn't ramble on too much and could be of some help.

I have one in the coyote. I love it. I shot 100gr v-max and have had good luck with deer and paper. at 70 yards the bullit did not pass though but the deer went 30 yards. At about 120 yards it did the same thing. I can put 3 shots under a quarter. It is a heary barel so the recoil is so low I baerly shoulder it.

Rimfirekid1022,
My stainless stalker didn't come with the boss. What I meant by no two rifles are the same, is that your rifle may have a longer or shorter throat than my rifle. You may be able to seat the bullet out further in your rifle than mine or not. You will still have to seat the bullet out long and start seating it in .020 at a time until your bolt closes. All the magazines for the 25 wssm are the same in all the different model of a-bolt rifles. I forgot to mention to you that I seated my bullet in father than I told you in my last message. I said that my C.O.L. was 2.370" with the 100 tsx load and I ended up seating it a bit deeper to 2.362" so I wouldn't have to remove to much material in the front of my magazine. You will just have to try and see what works best in your rifle. Let me know how it works out for you.
