Found a 257 JDJ barrel today and decided I had to have it. Been searching for 225 brass online and looks like the best deal is at Huntington. Anyone have a better place for brass?

Also looking for load info. Will call SSK tommorrow to see what I can get from them.

Hopefully someone can give me some info on the scope that was attached to this barrel. It is a Leupold 24X and has about a 12 in. eye relief. Never seen anything like this. What can someone tell me about it?

Looks like it will be a great long range varmint round as well as whitetail.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
The Leupold scope you have is likely one of Wally Siebert's conversions. He will take 36x Leupold and make it a long eye relief 10+ inches and in so doing it becomes a 20x. I don't know what an actual magnification a 24x would convert too. I'm curious to know what the actual magnification is.

Thanks for the replies. What were these scopes used for? I would think benchrest would be about the only application due to the critical eye relief and narrow field of view.

xphunter - He told me that would become about 15x after the conversion. I am very seriously considering this conversion for myself in my silhouette endeavors. On a side note, you should come on up to KC and take part in a silhouette competiton or two. I think that our halfsize game would give an accomplished marksman such as yourself a challenge!

talk to me...

VA Jim - If this scope doesn't fit your needs, then maybe we could work something out as I'd love to try that scope out without having to convert my current scope. I have several regular handgun scopes that would probably fit your needs better if you're planning to use it for deer hunting. Drop me a line at [email protected]...

BKoes,
I basically asked VA Jim the same thing.
What day of the week do you have your competitions?
I have never shot silhouette before. I don't even know the rules or the classes. Does some silhouette take place from the off-hand standing and the back or side style I have seen? Every discipline has it's own learning curve and I am not so sure how good I would do. I have no doubt it would be a challenge for me. Give me a web page on the basic rules and classes that you shoot in. My XP's may not qualify.
I will be calling you in the 30 days or so for a prairie dog shoot on either a Friday or Saturday

Thanks to all for the info. That really is a great closeout price on the brass at Graff's. I should be ready try the new barrel next week!

One of our shoots takes place on the 4th Saturday of each month (over in Higginsville, MO). The other ones are on Sunday, which I know is not a good day for you. If nothing else, you could come up for a practice day on the 2nd Saturday to a range on the KS side and get a flavor of it. I'd be happy to meet up with you and give you the "tour". You can get rules at www.ihmsa.org. XP's can run over the weight limits so if you're shooting heavy barrels then it is likely that it would not qualify. However, I suspect that as a "first-timer" folks would go easy on you and you would have to reckognize that your scores would have to be disregarded in terms of the "competition". You will find that most folks really are there shooting to win anything since there really aren't any prizes. It's more about the chance to shoot and "blastin some steel".

scope

VA Jim - I can't check my emails during the day while I'm at work, but I definitely think your in the range. I've got a couple of scopes that might be of interest to you. I've got a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6x that is as new that would probably be best suited for hunting larger game. I've got a couple of other scopes if that doesn't suit your needs.

Then again maybe Ernie has already snagged this scope... Can we bid on it? ;) xphunter, I thought you wanted a 36x for the conversion anyway! :p

B_Koes,

I sent you email, but since you can't get it now, I'll do it here.

I wouldn't be interested in the Bushnell (I have a Trophy and don't care for the long constant eye relief and narrow field of view). Would consider other pistol scopes or possibly rifle scopes. Also, Contender barrels are always good trade material.

Can't find a model anywhere on the scope, so am not sure of model.

My other scopes are...

Leupold 4x
Burris 10x
Leupold 2.5-8x
Burris 3-12x (w/ballistic plex)

I would have to replace the last two scopes, but would trade them if you wanted something immediately as I can affort to wait a while for an opportune moment.

As for Contender barrels...

14" .223
10" .22LR
15" .22LR match (VVCG)
14" 6.5 TCU

I might even consider trading off a blue contender frame...

Rifle scopes...

Simmons Whitetail Classic 6-24x50 (new in box)
Weaver KT-15

Let me know if anything really tickles your fancy. Then again I might be just as happy to pay you some $$$.

B_Koes,
I clicked on the web page and it wouldn't let me access anything. Could you try again or just e-mail the the basics.
Or would you rather go PD shooting and take some shots beyond 600 yards?

Ernie

P.S. If it works out that you get the scope that would really go well on your first XP!!!

Sorry Ernie...I didn't see your reply on this thread. Here's a fix to that previous link www.ihmsa.org the problem is that I put the link at the end of the sentence and it included the period as part of the address. It would have worked if you removed the trailing "." but I also think the site was down recently so maybe that is the explaination.

As for the dog shoot, I'd love to go but nothing that I have is ready for such a demanding shoot. My barrel that I wanted to use is not currently shooting very well. I still have to find a load that shoots better than 2" @ 100 yds.

Bret,
Just because there may be shots that are long doesn't mean you have to shoot at them. Sorry about your barrel not shooting good. Thanks for the web page--it works now. Are there any F-Class (Farky) shoots in the KC area?
