I'm contemplating a custom Howa or Remington based rifle in 257WM. Anyone have anything good/bad to say about it? Thought about a 25 WSM, but it might be kind of a hassle forming brass, etc. Thanks for input!

I had a Howa 1500 in 300 Win Mag that shot and performed like a champ. Traded it off because it kicked too hard and was too loud. I now have one in 30-06 which is very good. You won't go wrong with either action, Remington or Howa.

Personally I'd go with the 257 WSM over the 257 WBY becuase I don't like belted cases. The Short magnums appear to be all the rage and if anything, forming brass for the .257 short mag would be a breeze. Even if the round is never commercialized, you could simply buy .270 WSM cases and neck them down to .257 in your sizing die. Weatherby brass is very scarce and very expensive. Also, he used that screwy radius shoulder and you have to fire form and jump through all sorts of hoops.
Just my .02 worth.

Do keep us posted on how your project is progressing. Best.

Bill as with any new rifle the best way to go is a few shots then clean it then a few more, as far as loads go most of the better reloading manuals have starting loads for all of the calibers I havent loaded for a 257 weat. in so long, I just got used to doing the 25-06 and being satisfied with the 200+ fps I was loosing, good luck with your new rifle. :D JIM

I think I will get the Howa in 300 WSM and have a barrel done in 25WSM at some point in the near future. I think their 300WSM is due out in March. I figure that would be the easiest route sine the Bolt face and magazine will already be WSM diminsions. Hopefully we will see more 25WSM ballistics posted in the near future. Thanks for the input!!
