Would someone more informed than myself tell me the difference between these two rounds? I would assume the #2 is an improved version. I understand the .338 JDJ is essentially just a .338/.444. I gave my copy of CARTRIDGES OF THE WORLD away and haven't purchased the newest one yet. I am thinking of having a carbine length barrel made in this chambering with hopes of using it on elk.

I think the .338 JDJ #2 is a caliber based on the 30-06 case. Almost straight cases, short necks, 60 Degree shoulders made for the Encore. That is I think it is.

If your talking contenders, I had...

a .338 JDJ #1 (marked with #1) that was based off the .303 case. I then sent the barrel to Dennis Lawrence or Brian(been a while) at SSK, who was at the time experimenting with the un yet released, .338 JDJ #2(off the .444 Marlin case), and rechambered my barrel and had either modified my dies or got another set, to work with it. I think the Encore .338 is called the .338-06 JDJ?

Handcannon, noticed your "Bigger is better!"

I think I saw your post looking for a new toy? I had fun with a 11 1/4" stainless SSK Encore .50 American Eagle. It shot .50 BMG 700 AP bullets in an inch at 50 yards, and was able to easily get .50 Maximum ballistics, with bullet weights up to 470 grains! Never got a chance to test accuracy at 100 yards, but with the 2x Leupold, it made nice little groups at 50 yards. Wish I would have hung on to it to get a moose or something? Dennis

338JDJ's

Yeah, the 1st one, on teh 303 Brit case, was actually called the 338CJMK and was designed for hammering the Rams in long-range handgun silhouette. The CJMK stood for Crowley-Jones-Mastadon-Killer. The Jones is JD Jones of SSK fame. The 338#2 is on the 444 case and the new 338-06JDJ is really a basic 338-06 with blown-out shoulder, straight walls, and shorter neck. His website claims awesome performance. I can't wait for mine, but what will a 180 or 200gr bullet from that have over the same wt bullets from an '06? Handgunning with wildcats isn't based on 'headspaces' it's based on us--'headcases'. I'll see all of you in the looney bin! This stuff will drive you crazy! On the other hand, I had a glove, I mean, I'll keep my wildcats!

I might have read it wrong, but a fella at the last gun show

had an XP-100 and a contender barrel marked 338 CJMK. The fire formed cases were 35 Remington cases. Hope to here about your 338-06 JDJ! Should be a thumper! Too bad my hands were too small for the Encore frame. I have to admit shooting .50 BMG 700 Armor Piercing bullets out of a stainless 11 1/4" SSK .50 American Eagle was "Enlightning!" Not a long range shooter as your .338-06 JDJ will be, but it was a thumper! Good shooting!
