Anyone have a good accurate load for the maxi using aa1680 & 158gr Hornaday XTP? Lee 2nd edition seems incorrect. It lists a max charge for the 158 jacketed at 25.3 & the max load for the 180gr jacketed is over that. What's up with that? Could someone explain this to me?

Thanks Tim,

But did you notice that the max charge for the 180ssp is higher than the max for the nos 158gr, both 1680 powder.

Isn't that somewhat unusual?

Sounds like a good reason to use 180gr bullets to me, that's what CW uses and what I'll be loading in mine if I ever get to the range with it, 158gr bullets are too lightly constructed for 357Max rifle velocities for hunting from what I recollect, compare the difference between pistol velocities and actual rifle velocities, there's quite a difference.

If you look at the seating depths, you will see that the 158, seats pretty deep, while the 180's I use are rifle bullets and hardly take up any case room at all.

Tim is correct, stay away from HP 357bullets for game. It May be OK for varmints or where bullet blowups are OK. I DO like the Hornady 158 XTP-SP bullet. Its OK at moderate velocities in the maxi. But what it really excels at is in the reg magnum when fired from a rifle or carbine!!

I don't like to post powder charges, but suffice it to say my loads are worked up to and have proven safe in my guns. MAX loads of aa1680, a mag pistol primer and a Hornady SSP180 bullet work wonderfully!! ::) ;D ;D

I picked up some of the 180 SSP's to try based on your posts CW. Will be trying them out after the hunting season is done. DP
