I shot 8 handmade rounds at 25yds today. The last 5 were shot with a Magnetospeed chronograph attached to the barrel so no serious accuracy testing was done. I just wanted to fireform the brass and get an idea of speed.

22" barrel from the 80s or 90s so I guess it probably has a slow(er) twist rate. If I remember I will verify it tomorrow.

Thanks, Dinny

What did you do for brass?
He used 30-30 brass.

What barrel did you convert to the 360?

357Mag> Maxi?

Did Bellm remark the barrel for you or did you use a stencil with your electro-etching machine?
I would do my 357 Mag but it shoots so good with factory ammo I don't want to mess with it. I know where there is a Henry 357 Mag single shot, hmmmmm

Dinny,

Was your load of 35 gr 1680 a full case up to the bullet base?
Dinny,

One more question: Did you swap out to a 30-30 ejector or modify the original 357 ejector?
Bellm did not mark the barrel. I plan to cerakote it and laser etch the new chambering. He annealled the ejector and lathe bored it when he cut the rim counterbore.

My load of 35gr was about 3/16" below the case mouth. After fireforming it's probably 1/4" below now. I have a pre-SB receiver with a large firing pin so pressures definitely have to be limited more thsn usual. I plan to test with Federal 215 LRM primers to see if that helps prevent primer flow into the FP hole. It's not a problem yet but I'm certain it will be within a few grains.

Thanks, Dinny

You sir are leading the pack!! Nice shooting and it's not even tuned in yet. That is a perfect deer cartridge if there ever was one.

Thank you for the kind words. I shot some more rounds through it today.

I didn't take a picture of the group I shot with ammo using the Federal magnum primers. It was embarrassing. I believe the slower speeds and poorer accuracy is due to too low of a powder charge being used in fireformed brass. I'll load a ladder and work my way up shooting them over a chrono.

I can do a Quickload run if you provide case capacity (weight of water in gr to fill a fired case), case length and COAL.

I will gladly take you up on that offer. Later tonight I'll PM you the data.

Thanks, Dinny
Just post the info here. I tend to miss PMs more than new posts. Also, I noted you reported a velocity above. I will try to "benchmark" your data vs. QL. Was that muzzle velocity, or velocity over sky screens at some distance.
I use a Magnetospeed chronograph. I'll have to get the case capacity data tonight. I was tuckered-out after cutting the lawn last and running errands night.

Thanks, Dinny
Finally, I found some time.

COAL: 2.357"
Bullet: 180gr .358" Speer SPFN
Case length: 1.795:
Water capacity in grains: 40.5

Thanks, Dinny

Ok, I did a first run and things are not making sense. It is telling me COAL, case capacity or powder parameters are off.

I changed seating depth to 1/4" deep and found 33 gr to reach 100% fill. You reported this should be closer to 35 gr.

If 35 grs of 1680 comes to 0.250" from the top, QL says the case would hold 42.7 gr of water

Even with a 42.7 gr case capacity, QL is showing 105.9% fill for 35 gr and a 2.357 COAL (0.328" seating depth). It is also showing 2520 fps from a 22" barrel and a pressure of 69 ksi.

Given that post #1 reported 2340 fps at 35 gr and post 12 indicates 2211 fps at 35 gr, the calculated 2520 fps tells me I am doing something wrong.

I've never had good luck with QuickLoad predictions for AA1680 matching actual performance in straight walled cases. They always come up with higher pressures than what the cases look like and much higher velocites than what my chrony is showing Is the 40.5gr water capacity for a fired or unfired case? Are you getting the water capacity by weighing a case, filling it with water weighing again ect? Had a guy message me about a different wildcat who was dumping the water out to weigh it and coming up short.

It is a fired case and I did pour the water out into my powder pan and weighed it on the scale. If it's possible to be off enough to skew the numbers I'll weigh, fill, weigh, and subtract the difference.
