I shot 8 handmade rounds at 25yds today. The last 5 were shot with a Magnetospeed chronograph attached to the barrel so no serious accuracy testing was done. I just wanted to fireform the brass and get an idea of speed.

22" barrel from the 80s or 90s so I guess it probably has a slow(er) twist rate. If I remember I will verify it tomorrow.

Thanks, Dinny

I do not think your 40.5 is accurate, but again even when I tried 42.7 gr for case capacity, the predicted velocity was way off. I even went up higher and this did not seem to "fix" things in a reasonable fashion.

I use WC 680 (milsurp 1680) a good bit in 357 Max and 357 AR max. When I was working up WC 680 loads for these guns, it was before I had Quickload.

I went back and was looking at my old data. A good bit of data is for revolvers and is not much use for comparison.

For my Wc 680 load with a 200 gr bullet in 357 AR max, I put it in QL and it looks to be overpredicting velocity by around 100 fps.

When I plug in data for some of my 180 gr loads, the QL overprediction is in the 40 fps to 100 fps range.

Not terrible given that I was using a milsurp powder, but not as close as I would like.

Looking at my old data reminded me that as I went over 102% fill (with any bullet), it seemed that I did not like the looks of the primers. Also I remember not liking the force required for bullet seating above this fill.

If I tweak your case capacity to a reasonable 102% fill and adjust the powder burn rate to get down to 2340 fps the calculated pressure comes down to just 51 ksi. If I adjust powder burn rate to get 2213 fps, pressure comes down to 43 ksi.

Now a Handi barrel has plenty of margin for hot loads. For your vintage gun, go "too hot" and I would expect primer failures and/or the receiver face could yield just a little at the firing pin hole (i.e. peen over).

Sounds like you are Ok, but do be careful and pay attention to all of the details as you play around in "uncharted waters".

Gents,
Thanks for your efforts. I've never had good luck with QL and A1680 either. Years ago I loaded a 270gr LFP into the 357 Maximum with A1680. QL told me the pressure was over 90K. My old pre SB Handi digested them like they were only 30K.

Thanks, Dinny

I used Fed 215 LR magnum primers with these loads today. I'm going back to LR standard primers. Although my SD was only 13 for the one load I chrono'd today, accuracy was abysmal. Bullet diameter was also a factor, I'm sure. The 165gr Hornadys averaged 2372fps with a SD of 13 for 10 shots.

So many targets yet still no cast bullets shot... shameful. Just sayin. ;)

Today I tested the Speer 180gr SPFN, A1680, and WLR primers. I also fired a couple of the bullets into my bullet box at 40yds. They held together well and have potential for even higher velocity. Barrel heat is a definite factor. My next test will be done on a cooler day or I'll allow more time in between shots. The square is 3"x3".

Speeds
38gr: 2369fps
37gr: 2302fps
36gr: 2222fps

I only loaded 3 rounds of 39 grain load. I don't test accuracy and velocity at the same time so I didn't get their speeds. The 38.5gr load is a 5 shot group. It shot it allowing more time in between shots to see if allowing the barrel to cool helped. It did somewhat as the last 3 shots were the closest ones.

Still no cast loads..

I only loaded 3 rounds of the 38.5 and 39 grain loads
Looks like the 38.5 grain load is the winner. 5 holes with 3 shots is impressive.........:ROFLMAO:

Thanks for catching that! Yes, I shot 5 of the 38.5gr load. I got a phone call that distracted me earlier while I was typing.

I appreciate you taking the time to post your results (y). Looking forward to accuracy testing.............
Yup 38.5 is the weiner! Velocity is on par with factory advertised as well and expansion is text book.

FWIW, I used that Speer 180gr for the first time at a claimed 2600FPS out of one of my .358s this past season and it worked very well. Full penetration and the decent sized Kentucky buck dropped in its tracks. At the speeds you're pushing it, it should work very well.

Nice KY buck!

I reconfigured data in QL using 35/30-30 Win as a base reference. 1.8" case length, 2.360" COAL, 41gr of H2O, etc.

A5744 shows more promise than any other powder I looked at.

QL says my 38gr loads of A1680 are over 114Kpsi so I don't exactly trust that my data is correct or QL is computing it correctly.

I got my hands on some Hornady 200gr FTX and Rem 200gr RNCL bullets last week. I have test loads with each loaded as well as some Speer 180gr SPFN with 37gr and 38.5gr of A1680. Also, I almost forgot, I loaded some 220gr Fury JFP bullets too. They performed very well during independant testing in 35 Rem. 😎

More to follow. I'll be at the range later today and plan to spend some time slow firing these loads. I suspect my Handi succumbs to heat injury quite easily.

Thanks, Dinny

I have to treat this barrel as though it's a superlight. It shoots 2 shot groups really well. 😁

38.5gr A1680 and the 180gr Speer SPFN average 2402fps and shot into 1.25" at 50yds.

I'll chrono the 200gr FTX loads in a few weeks after I get back from Maine. My son will be hunting black bear for the first time. He'll be carrying his 357 Maxi Handi rifle loaded with the 180gr Barnes TSX FN.
