Thinking about trying lead bullets, something like the Laser Cast or Oregon Trail 405 gr. Any tried these on deer? A good powder and starting load for at least 1300 fps?

My 5 star load (Hunting) in (my) Handi 45/70 is 25.5 grains 2400 with 1/2 grain dacron /FLRP/starline brass/N.O.E.350 grain G.C.(B.H.N.is 12) . The velocity for this load is A/1528 B/1508 C/1502 D/1471 E/1512 with an SD 20.9 @ 100 yds it will hold 2 inch groups 6 inch high and at 200 yds I use the lower post on my Leuopold 2x7 to hit POA The many deer hit with that load leave a blood trail Ray Charles could follow And he was dead and blind too ,almost forgot recoil is like shooting a 30-30 ! It's a 45/70, any flatnose design at 13-1500 fps is gonna make venison. I personally use a slightly compressed load of IMR7383 surplus 50cal spotter powder for such loads. But that is mostly because I bought a metric crap ton of it cheap and it works very well. I have also used a duplex load of 4198 and various 50BMG surplus powders. Not gonna hand that load out though. My H&R 22 inch Handi Rifle hate hate hated any of the 2400 and filler type loads. Fill the case up with slow powder and a 457122, or my custom 405 grain flatnose mould and she prints tiny groups though. I use lead pipe alloy and all is good with the world. I use a pretty full case of REL 7 for my more "energetic" loads, but I do not shoot many of them cause I am a wuss.

What’s the rifle? I’m curious but not for pressure reasons as you stated 1300 ft/s. A single shot is easily cleaned but lever actions aren’t that much of a problem. You can’t go wrong with 65-70 grains of 3f dropped slowly through a drop tube and compressed so that a soft lead bullet sits on top of powder column and a milk carton wad. A black powder lube is called for and there are plenty of recipes on the net. I use Gato Feo’s #1 (search on Graybeard forum). One word of caution, shooting black powder is highly addictive and detox has a high failure rate.

I have two, a Handi and a new Henry. I can't handle the hard kicking loads anymore and figured the 1300-1500 would be a good range.

I USE THE 405 GR BULLET FROM OREGON TRAILS ALSO, I USE CCI MATCH PRIMER WITH 38.0 GRS RL 7. I TAKE A FIBER CARD AND PUT IT OVER THE POWDER PUSHING IT DOWN WITH A PENCIL, NOT TIGHT OVER THE POWDER BUT AGAINST IT. THEN I FILL THE CASE WITH PUF-LON FILLER FLUSH WITH THE CASE MOUTH. SEAT THE BULLET TO THE CRIMP GROOVE AND USE THE LEE FACTORY CRIMP DIE TO CRIMP. IN MY HANDI RIFLE IT IS VERY ACCURATE WITH NO LEADING. REMEMBER THIS IS MY LOAD FOR MY HANDI. PUFF-LON GIVES BETTER ACCURACY AND NO LEADING, MORE CONSISTANT VELOCITIES.
