Hey guys whats your opinion on useing either caliber for deer and bear hunting out to 150 yards max.I'm looking at both for my encore rifle.I want the short rifle barrels.I reload so ammo is no problem,can taylor what I need.

For a rifle in those chamberings, I would go for the 45-70 since bullet options are a bit better than for the 500 S&W. For a handgun, it would be the 500 S&W. Both would work just fine though for either application.

45-70. Based strictly on personal preference and nothing else.
