:?: I am considering between the two of these cartridges in a rifle. Anyone have any idea if the loading of the two is the same? It looks like they are essentially the same cartridge. Can the 450 be downloaded like the 45-70?
You bet, They balistically the same cartrige. The 450 was designed so that you couldn't put top end loads in a old trapdoor. I have a couple of 450s and 45/70s. They are every bit equall to each other. KN
I thought the reason they built the 450 was to save a slumping cartridge, 45-70 data was and is thin because so many firearms have been made for so many years from black powder to modern there was worry about putting too strong a cart in too weak a weapon. the new 450 means only new firearms and now safe for relatively full power loads, I shoot an encore with 45-70 nosler solid loads for bear and love it.
45-70 will always be around because it is a classic cartridge. I went thru the same question but decided to go for the 450m as it was maxed from the factory. Ammo here has been easy to find ,around $20. a box and I have picked up dies, brass and bullets with no problem. There is only one factory loading but what more do you need. I practice by breaking rocks. I bought the ported guide gun but traded for the new 450m because of the noise . It is one of those friends you want to pack when you are alone in the deep dark woods.
