I have a 22" Handi in 45-70. I have been reloading 405 lead for it with Varget. Havent had a chance to shoot anything with it yet but just curious what everyone likes.

I am partial to H4198. I also like the LBT style hard cast lead bullets. Mine tended to be on the heavy side but if I were loading for deer, I would use a 350 grain LBT Beartooth lead bullet or a 350 Hornady Interlock behind a mild to light-mid charge of H4198. You will get 2000 fps which is plenty.

I have 2- a 300gr Rem HP over 47 gr of RL7 ( my 7-47 load), and a 330 gr cast over 34 gr of 4198. The first for "Lever level" and above, the other I use for my Trapdoor level. Both will dispatch deer quite effectively.

Hornady 350gr RNFP over 48gr Reloader7. Knocks down 2a year average for me.

38.5gr of IMR 3031 with a 405gr Rem JFP. This load duplicates factory Remington 405gr ammo.

Thanks, Dinny

350-405 lead over a 100% to base of bullet load of TrailBoss.
Same bullets over 12-13gr. of Unique will be similar.
Deer are thin skinned and not dangerous, they fall readily to big dia. lead at pedestrian speeds if you put the bullet where they live.
Now if you want to shoot them at 350yds you can try to stoke the 45-70 up to be a flat shooter and you wont be able to take the recoil anywhere close to it getting 'flat' in trajectory. Use another caliber.

A 300 gr Remington hollow point over 50.0 gr RL7. Puts 3 shots near touching at 100 yards in all three of the 45-70's in the family. None of us has had to track a deer yet.

I have the same gun. Mine shoots really well with my cast from RCBS 405 GC mold that drops at 414 grains I believe. Put 34.0 grains of RL7 under it and it is quite accurate. Haven't chronyed it yet though. Been wanting to try H4198 to go a little slower, but haven't tried that yet.

Mine have liked everything I put in them so far.

Just saying. [emoji57]
