I have looked all around and can not find any information that shows load data for the 45-90win, jacketed bullets at 40ksi levels (or lever gun levels, however it is listed). I dont find data that shows velocities exceeding the 45-70, so I know the working pressures are not the same for the presentations. Does any exist, I emailed Hodgdon and Alliant and have not heard back from them as of yet.

I'd try Accurate powder. They have loads for all sorts of big cases using 5744 powder. 45-90 is not supported by SAAMI so most powder outfits won't list smokeless loads for it.

I fell into that one Richard, called Wayne to see when my 260 Rem barrel would ship, asked me if I wanted a 26" Ultra barrel that had a buggered chamber, said he could rebore and rechamber it to a big bore like 45-70 or bigger, 450NE, 450AK, 50-70, etc for the cost of the rebore, so I thought on it, not wanting to deal with expensive brass and dies, called him back to order the 45-90, should be done in 1-2 months. I would have loved a 9.3x74R, but he doesn't do .366" rebores.....yet, still working on him for that. ;D

I did hear back from Alliant, they say they have no internal data, and provided Lyman 49th for me.

Interesting info about the saami situation, if so, I agree that is the reason for the lack of data.

Quick, I may take you up on that. I need to order some brass, then the reamer. I will probably be using 777 for starters with the cases and eventually get some heavier than 300gr jacketed bullets to play around with smokeless. I do hope that I am still happy with my 45-70 performance after the conversion.

Where is wild west guns 457 data available, new to me. I was hoping Hodgdon would have some thing to add using H4895, since they use this for their youth loads. using this powder as a light load 458winmag would seem to be a candidate that translates to the 45-90.

Hi Guys
I don't post much but this topic is something I've been working on for almost a year.
I took a T/C 45-70 barrel with a muzzle brake and re-chambered to 45-100 Sharps (2.6") new starline brass ,lyman dies, speer 400gr. FNSP bullets and finally settled on a load that launches that bullet at 2268 ( 10 fps standard deviation over 5 rounds) through my chrony with smokeless rifle powder. Very safe load with no signs of excessive pressure anywhere--I figure its around 41,000 psi. The 2.6' starline brass has 8 grains of case capacity over a 458 WM Not enough difference to cause pressure problems. I've fired over 100 rnds with that load now andI'm on my third load per case--- the brass grows very little
The brass is excellent and much cheaper than the Wild West 457 stuff-- all the 457 loads are tailored around the 1895 Marlin lever gun and a 1/10" longer 45-70 case with no room to work the load. The 45-90 case could out perform the 45-70 in a ruger#1 or Encore but the pressure would be above 51,000 to do so . I'm willing to share my loads but only over the phone.
I hate typing. By the way it shoots 1.5 " at one hundred (24"standard contour barrel plus 1.5" brake) Would probably group well at 300 but I can't see that far!!!
Good hunting------ Heavybullets
