I've been doing some reading around here and on Veral's page, and I'm wondering if there's a mold (or if anybody makes) a .475-.476 bullet in the 350-370 grain range with a wide meplate of .38-.39, or somewhere around there.

I shoot a .480, and according to Veral, the muzzle velocity with any given cast bullet should equate to 1.25 inch wound channel (optimum). But, other than Beartooth's 325 grain (.390 meplat), the only other bullet that I've seen commercially is the 420-425 grain with .385 meplat. I cant push those heavy bullets fast enought to get that 1.25 inch.

I can't figure out why in the world the 350 370 grain bullets only have a meplat around .340 or so.

Anybody have an answer for me?

Thanks,

Jon

Ps. I don't cast my own (yet)

just because its big.............

A big meplat will maybe make a bigger hole in an animal. It may even go in a straight line, maybe not. My 405 grain Keith has meplat of 350 and will penetrate in a straight line and even shoot well out to 1000 yards.
I would suggest casting your own from a Mountain Mold which you can design your self and see what happens. Or you can but a mold and I will be happy to cast for you. I very much doubt you will be happy with a large meplat on your bullet.

Frank405,

Why do you think I wouldn't be happy with a large meplat? I realize is reduces penetration a little, but that's what the heavy bullet is for, right?
So, why not a big meplat to give larger would channels? Is there something else that I'm missing?
I'm trying to get a grip on this.

Thanks,

Jon

To get a meplate of .400 or larger in .475 caliber you will have to cast your own.I have never seen a commercial bullet this large a meplate. I have about 20 moulds for the .475 caliber .
And remember Veral knows a lot ,but his fomulas are not perfect or exact .
Last year I shot 2 deer with a TC Encore-SW 500 using a 395gr WFNPB at 1250 fps the would channel was easily 2-4" all the way through with massive damage. And 1250 fps is low velocity.
The meplate on the 395gr WFNPB is 83% of .500 ,this is a custom mould from mountainmolds designed on his site.
