i know the 7-30 is a flatter shooting round, but how much more than the 30 30? also, anyone have experience shooting nosler ballistic tips though a 30-30 super 14? how do they preform on game/ ballisticly? shot a 30-30 tonight for the first time and was impressed with the mild recoil; seemed pretty accurate, too. just wondering...

I have harvested several deer and antelope with the 125 BT in both the 30-30 and the .300 Savage contenders. Used barrel lenghts of 10..12..and 14 inches. Never lost an animal and never recovered a bullet as all were complete pass throughs. Shots ranged from about 35 yards to a little over 200 yards. The 125 BT in the 30 cal. mirrors the performance of the 7-30 120 BT on deer. The 7mm just has a bit better trajectory at the longer ranges, but it is not significant.

Kyode.. I have a 7-30 waters and a 30-30AI. I have a keg of AA2200 I use for fireforming loads. I filled the cases full to the top and this is what I came up with as far as a case capacity comparison:

30-30 standard...46.5 gr.
7-30 waters........47.5 gr.
30-30AI.............49.6 gr.
300 savage.......54.7 gr.
30-06................68.5 gr.

I tried to get a water weight comparison but it was too messy so I did the ball powder instead.

My opinion is the 30-30 AI is the more efficient of the group. It has become one of my favorites

would it be fair to say...

that when using ballistic tips, the advantage of the 7-30 isnt very much over the 30-30? if i am understanding everyone, the main thing is a touch flatter tradjectory?

7-30 vs. 30-30...

I have had both. I have two 7-30 Waters right now. My buddy and I hunt together and he used the 30-30 14" w/Nosler Ballistic Tips and W748 powder. He gets about 100 fps less than I do with my load of IMR 4895. This load is the most accurate in our pistols. He took a doe this year at 60 yards and she went down like she was hammered. She got back up and went about 20 yards and piled up. Good entry and exit and lots of damage to the lungs and took the tip of the heart. We have shot this load in the 30-30 out to 150 yards with very good success. I use the 120 Hornady V-Max in my 7-30 w/twelve inch barrel and break and the 139 Hornady SST in my 14" w/break. I took a 100 lb buck Thanksgiving with the 139 SST and it only went about ten yards. I think it's a little to stout of a bullet to be shooting at pistol velocities. My buddy and I are working on a load with the Sierra SSP bullets right now and we are going to do some group shooting as soon as it warms up. 8)
Saying all of that, I don't think within 150 yards there is much difference in them. I know mine starts to shine at 200 yards to were the 30-30 is starting to fall a little faster. :agree: Get one of each and this will cure the problem.

30-30 ackley is SWEEEEEEEEEEEET!, just DONT use Ackley's loads from his book. i believe he lists max load of 39 grs of 3031 with a 125 gr bullet. this equals maybe 2-3 reloads for the brass, i backed down to about 37 grs. and have been ok ever since
