:!: What ever happened to the 8mm Rem Mag? I beleive this is a great cal. and have found it to be a superior bear stopper han any of the 300. mags, Iam not sure if Remington continues to produce ammo in this cal. It should have been more popular, by the way thoes new short mags leave me unempressed, has anyone elnse have any experience with the 8mm?

8mm Rem Mag

:sniper: the last time I used this rifle on bear was 10 years ago,and droped a Michigan bear inits tracks at 80 yards, on the DNR scales it was just over 300 lbs, my hunting partner shot a similer bear from the exact same place using his 300 weatherby, that bear ran 100 yds and needed a second shot, ti was about to get up agin, at that point I shot it in the neck at about 10 yds, putting an end to the situation, after that hunt I did not have much respect for his 300 WBY mag.My finishing shot was with a .44 rem mag in ruger red hawlk.

The 8mm Rem Mag has never truly been very popular, and its popularity now is even less than it used to be. It is very close to a .338 and that is probably part of its demise. However, this is not to say that it is not an effective cartridge, because it is.

If you REALLY want an 8mm Rem Mag, then you should get it. However, if you want a more practical cartridge, then get a .338 Win. Mag.

I had one some years ago. It was alright by me. I couldn't really tell any difference betwixt it and my 338 though. I liked the rifle that the 338 was in better than the 700, so I got rid of the 8. Nothing wrong with it, just liked my Ruger better than the Remington.

 I find it hard to believe your partner put a .300 Wby through the vitals of a Black Bear and it didn't kill him.

I guided Black Bear hunters for several years here in the U.P.(mostly before the idiotic lottery system). Any deer rifle will easily dispatch even a large Black Bear with a good double lung shot. I've personally killed 14 with one shot Bow/arrow kills, most of them died within 60 yds. However, a poor hit can result in a long night. even with an 8MM or .338.

 The .300 Wby Mag has greater energy/velocity than an 8MM Rem Mag with 200 gr bullets
