Need to use something in my gun safe and locker, and closet to absorb humidity. Dessicant containers would work but I have to re-activate them too often during the hot humid summers here in the south. I recently heard somewhere about using cat litter as an absorbent for moisture. Anyone else know about this?

I just put a ceramic light fixture under the top shelf of my safe and keep a regular 40 W bulb on all the time. It keeps it dry perfectly. I can even use the safe as a drying cabinet for stocks I'm re-finishing. Warm, dry, and no lint or dust floating around. Those Goldenrod type dryers use a 100 watts, mine uses 40 watts and provides light also.

I use cat litter in junction with a black plastic guncase (foam removed) as a stock cooker to remove primordial gun ooze (cosmoline) from milsurps. Fill one side of the case with cat litter, place stock in case, close lid and set on concrete in hot sun. Rotate every day or two. Takes 2-4 weeks to work. Gets most of the offending yuck out of the stock without using harsh cleaners.

Same as dave375hh. I use a cabinet tube type light with a 25 watt bulb. My safes are in the basement where it can get pretty humid and I have never had a problem with rust. KN
