Pay no attention to my good friend Marsh. He's been breathing those noxious fumes frum BP too long.

Since I own this place and don't use BP myself I'd say it is fine to discuss the use of smokeless in your BPCR. Now with some of these old rascals here it might be hard to get a conversation going on it tho as they don't even know what smokeless is. I've been trying to teach them but they are slow learners. :-D

Ed if you'd experience the BLACK you'd probably be hooked. Maybe you have--- I experiment with both myself but find the charcoal the most satisfying...

I'd say go ahead on the smokeless road here. My choice now is 4759 plain and simple.. Clean burning, nice ES's for medium range shooten and very accurate. What say ya?

I am using 4759 and Unique in 45/70 and 40/65. I find both burn relatively clean. I have very little experience with the 40/65 though.
My Unique loads run in the range of 12 to 14.5 grains with all bullet weights in the 45/70.
My rifles are Brownings and are too difficult to dissassemble for use of BP
for me. I might try black powder with a RRB but I am mostly too lazy and concerned about a rusting everything touched by the BP.
I would like to hear from anyone that uses light smokeless loads at about 1100 to 1400 FPS. If anyone has any bullet or powder recommendations I am all ears. I am also interested in mold recommendations for 300 and 405 grain GC 45/70 bullets and a light 260 to 300 grain GC bullet for the
40/65.

Ed, the many shoot the Brownings with BLK all the time. I don't think disassembly is needed for a decent cleanup. Me I spray some window cleaner down the chamber-- follow that with large patches of toweling around a brush and coat with Kroil. Everything is stay'n shiney too.

IMO use a nice, tight wad on the powder-- oversize for good seal. I suspect that nice plume at report has me hooked!

EDG I use 26.5 gr. of AA5744 and a magnus 405gr. bullet. It burns clean gives just over 1300 fps and a sd of 7 out of my 45/70.

Thanks for your responses and information. I vist these boards every day. I will be back after a little more shooting experience is agained.

BruceP what sort of groups do you get with the 405/5744?

EDG I really haven't shot that gun much with that or any load and what I have shot in it was for cronograph info. They were shot at a 100 yd target though and best I remember those few groups were around 3" with a hunting style tang peep sight and blade front. I know that other people get better groups with that type of sighting arangement and maybe I can too if I can get to shoot it some more. I haven't shot rifles with any type of iron sights in a long time.I quoted the load because with that low of a SD I think it shows promise. When I have time to get to the bench again this is one gun the I have put a priority on really testing. By the way my load was with Remington standard primers.
