Hi all,

What is the feasibility of a hunt for Brown bears on the west side of Cook Inlet? If I was to have someone fly me across from Homer/Kenai/Soldotna and drop me and a buddy off on the beach for a week or two, would a person have much success hunting along the beach and up some of the streams? Are there many Brownies over there? I'm thinking about this fall or next spring. Which season would be preferable? I'm not looking for a huge one, just a nice average size bear. Can you give me any areas that I might focus my attention on? How about a good air taxi out of Homer/Kenai/Soldotna? Of the times previously mentioned, what dates would be best? I'll take any and all tips and advice. Thanks in advance for any info you guys might have.

Cheers,
Kyle

There ARE bears over there.

Yep there are bears over there but I have little knowledge about hunting them. My dad hunted over there somewhere about - jeez !- 50 years ago and my late father-in-law set netted Trading Bay 30-40 yrs ago and had to watch out for bears.

But things have changed a bit since those days. I'd suggest you contact the ADFG Game biologists in Soldotna and Anchorage to get some info. For one thing there are protected areas to avoid, private Native lands to respect etc. First find out where you CAN hunt. I bet some of that area gets worked over pretty good due to its easy access from Anchorage and the Peninsula. You may want to consider flying a little farther west and try the Mulchatna drainage - most bears aren't real big but there seems to be no shortage of them. Fall would be easier time over there. Consider some of the air taxis out of Kenai / Soldotna, or out of Iliamna. I have had good experiences with Iliamna Air Taxi.

Or check with Tyonek folks, I think they are managing hunting on their lands and may be able to provide a package - don't know how to reach them though.

Good luck.

Thanks

Hey Dand,

Thanks for the info. That's what seems to be the feedback I'm getting on some other forums, that a little further west would be better. Thanks again.
