Folks,I am considering an elk hunt this coming fall and just to be different,I have thought about using my Contender carbine. I already own a 7-30 Waters and think I could use a stouter cartridge for elk. I have contacted both JD and Van Horn about a .338 based on a .444 casing. JD calls his a .338 JDJ #2. Van Horn is sending me more info by snail mail. Anyone out there have any experience with these cartridges or something like it? I think I would load the new Hornady 220 SST. Any thoughts or maybe a different cartridge comes to mind. This is for a CONTENDER..not an ENCORE...THANKS
Merry Christmas everyone...

I'm not a big fan of wildcats. So I would get a barrel in the good old 45-70 or a .375 Winchester. I know that both would be handloaded to their maximum potential, but you could still get factory ammunition in case something happened like losing your ammo in transit .
