Since I'm living in Colorado and I have a Contender what would you suggestions be for an appropriate caliber for elk? I was thinking on the lines of the .30 Bower Alaskan, the .309JDJ, etc. Am I undergunned? Suggestions please!

If a Moose can be taken with a 3030 ,the 309jdj should do for elk! Just remember elk are tougher to kill than Moose.Limit your shots and bullet weights and you will get your elk. jh

You can't do better than a 45-70 GOVT. or even the .375JDJ. But if you like the .308 cal. then go with the .309JDJ If you don't think you can take the 45-70.

I will say a 444 Marlin in the Contender SSK will make a custom barrel for you or rechamber a .44Mag barrel to the 444.You can load it up with some 240gr XTP's for deer, then step it up with some 300gr XTP's for elk and bear.I have an older .44Mag barrel that has been rechambered to the 444 Marlin and let me tell you it SHOOTS! I am able to keep a 1" to 1.5" group at 100yrds. and at 200yrds it shoots 1.5" to just under 2" groups at 300yrds it will hold right at 3.5" groups all day.I love it :D

How about 358 JDJ or 358 Bellm? Both hit hard and carry energy out for better long range performance. I can't argue against the 375 JDJ or the 444 marlin either, but if you want a 358 bore, both above are very good.

my opinion only,

from everything I have read...........

I would go with the 309 JDJ......I havent tried one....but in 'my' opinion.....the 375 has had some bad press for penetration ( not quite fast enough) 358 is better for expansion??? .....I am betting the 309 in a pistol is going to be a little better for tragectory/vs knockdown syadayadayada......maybe better pistol velocity than 30-30 rifle.....just a guess....

Elk caliber in Contender

The .309JDJ is do-able as I've taken elk with mine using a 165gr NBT. I'd rather have a bigger, heavier bullet for more penetration, though. That's why I have a .411JDJ for elk, moose, etc. RKBA! :)
