I was sitting in a box blind on a bucket (4 pallets screwed together) facing a creek where I had seen them coming out before. I was on the other side of the creek 3 times and only saw small ones. The farmer told me I might have better luck on the other side. It was getting late on the last day, about 4:30 and I heard something behind me. I was in a cornfield on a hill looking down. At first I thought it was another dang squirrel, stomping around. Then I realized that there were no trees around. I spun around with the gun in my hand and I saw him and he saw me. He was about 25 yards away and took off running. I shot once he kept running, circled toward the woods and gave me a running broadside shot. I reloaded and hit him in through the foreleg, both lungs and through the other leg. Both legs were broke. He droped his front quarters and struggled to get up. No go. A few minutes later he laid down and bled out. I am guessing about 300 - 325 lbs live weight. It was a real struggle for me to get him in the truck by myself. I managed.
Thats a super nice deer! What caliber and load did you use on him? And what part of the country has deer that big bodied? Your luck was really running that day.
