I sent NEF an email asking if the 25-06 or 280 come in extractor models. The reply was those calibers would be available in extractor models in late this fall.

Yet another delima for me. Save money now and get ejector or wait, pay more, and get extractor???

Right about the time I thought I had my mind made up :?

Anyone with an extractor, does it look like the ejector model could be converted?

Why would you want an extractor on a single shot hunting rifle? If your benchresting it all the time...or even on a varmint rig...I could understand it...but on a hunting rifle that will most likely be used with gloves on???I know folks like them...and all...but...it just doesn't make good sense to me..I used to have them on my shotguns...for trap and skeet...they would suffice..but not where you might be in a hurry to reload quickly...

The ejector can be converted to a spring driven extractor, but not a mechanical extractor as comes from the factory, the underlug is totally different. There have been some here that have ordered barrels with an extractor instead of the ejector, so I would just request the extractor on your barrel order to take advantage of the barrel discount offer. They won't come standard on any model except the new calibers until they run out of the old style underlug, I'm sure that's what CS meant when they said they won't be available until later this year, that's the same thing they told Mac earlier this year. You may have to wait longer for the new underlug to be installed, but I'd still order it with an extractor now if you want one.

I agree with your logic except that to me it would be worse to have a stuck case in the field.

I don't want to send my receiver off though and wait till the end of the fall to get it back. I'll need it to hunt coyotes before that.

Has anyone had any majar stuck case problems with the 30-06 (280, 25-06, etc) cased rounds?

Some of us prefer not having to look for brass. ....or have developed skills on reloading an extractor gun just as fast as some people can open an ejecter gun or run a level or bolt.

When hunting, I carry a cartridge between my left ring finger and middle finger, and another between my middle finger and pointer finger by the rim. I can pull out the empty with pointer and thumb then load another in the next motion of my hand. ...not that big of a deal, nor is there any humanly noticable time difference between that and ejecting a round and loading another.

Knight...I've never seen anyone who can operate a rifle when it's cold and with gloves on that has an extractor as fast as operating one that has ejector.
As to having to look for brass...when I'm hunting big game...losing 1 or 2 pieces of brass isn't a big deal for me...I too hold shells in my left hand when approching game when I'm stalking....like I said.. it doesn't make good sense to me having extractors...unless doing alot of bench shooting or varmint hunting...

Handi...looks like you got your mind made up on the 280...and that's a good thing...I hope it shoots great for you...

When I talked to them about this, I did not get an indication that the extractor was available upon request. They told me it was available only on a select few chamberings. Was anyone told that we could request and just wait a little longer to get the extractor on any chambering?

I don't know for sure...may have been a particular caliber that was the subject at the time, dunno....but that person did say it was possible to get an extractor by request.

Just did a search, it was youngbdv that got a .223 barrel with an extractor by request.

I got a couple of guns with extractors rather than ejectors and don't find them slow at all. Just swing the butt down and the barrel up as you break it and the case drops free. Does it every time, too, which you can't say for the NEF ejector and the higher pressure cartridges.

I had an '06 w/ ejectors and I had problems. It happened only after about the third shot at the range w/in about a 5 min shooting span. After it cooled, it kicked the brass out easily. I guess for deer hunting when would you need a third shot? Hopefully not. But that is the reason that I sold the gun. I just got a little nervous knowing that it could happen when I might need a quick follow up shot on a big buck. It did shoot very good and had an awesome trigger for a "cheap" rifle. It also felt good when shouldered and it carried well too. Everything that you would look for when buying a rifle. After browsing through this forum, and seeing how many people have and enjoy them; I'll be buying another one or two or three.

Welcome aboard!! There have been a lot of "non ejectors" bought by us and made good shooters out of at bargain prices cuz the original owners didn't have any "Handi-sense"!!! A good chamber polish and keeping the chamber dry and clean will prevent normal pressure loads from sticking. Max loads have a better than average chance of sticking.

I know whatcha mean, Fred.....but it's our duty to educate those that want to learn.....then they can carry on the tradition of sharing info. But....the search feature is a truly under utilized resource here....and most forums for that matter. The other resource that is under utilized is the FAQ sticky along with the other stickys at the top of this forum list.

Quick ---- You are right about ths FAQ and SEARCH being under used .

BUT,,,, the FAQ are very good and easy to use.

The search on the other hand is a royal pain to use for a quick refrence, also i think it is just overlooked in all the other stuff at the top of the page

The Search is real easy to use if you know a couple tricks....

Select the Search for all terms button and then from the drop down, hit the down arrow and highlight the bottom choice, then hit the N key twice, you'll instantly highlight the NEF Centerfire forum, click it and proceed with the search...

You can also right click the Search function at the top of the page and select open in new window so you don't loose the thread you were replying to.

All the tools and resources are at our finger tips, it's just a matter of knowing how and when to use the right tool for the job. :wink:
