Now we have something to debate and don't forget that Fox News uses the Associated Press to help formulate these articles - especially the Left leaning in the last sentence.

DeSantis Signs Bill Allowing Teachers to Carry Guns on Campus

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A Florida bill that will allow classroom teachers to legally carry guns was signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday.

Legislation was in response to Parkland school shooting last year

Bill would allow more school personnel to legally carry gun on campus

It now heads to GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis' desk for signature into law

The bill expands the "guardian" program signed into law last year, which allowed school personnel with the exception of classroom teachers to be armed, provided they go through proper training. Under this new measure, the exception is removed.

The training would include police-style training and a psychiatric evaluation.

The legislation stems from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland last year in which 17 people were killed.

"What do we say as state policy makers to those counties who cannot have a law enforcement officer on their campus?" Republican Sen. Manny Diaz, whose 36th District includes Miami-Dade County.

Diaz says the legislation doesn't make carrying a gun mandatory and that school administrators should have the option.

Parents, lawmakers react

Not all parents and teachers back the plan.

"I am one of those mothers who definitely would not want my child in a classroom with a gun, knowing a gun was in there with that teacher, even if it was the teacher of the year," parent Nina Yoakum said.

Parents in Orlando had mixed reactions. One mom at Hillcrest Elementary School said she thinks teachers need proper training first.

“If they are going have to training, I agree, I think they have to protect the kids inside the school,” said Angie Cerro.

But another parent, who did not want to be identified, said the responsibility is too heavy for teachers.

“I feel teachers have enough responsibility, and to have them be armed is something they are not prepared for,” they said.

On the national level, U.S. Rep. Val Demings of Orlando is reintroducing a bill to block the White House from using anti-terrorism funding to give guns to educators. Demings says arming teachers is a recipe for disaster and calls the guardian bill reckless.

I approve of Teacher carry, provided each Teacher passes the concealed carry prerequisites, take appropriate training classes in firearms safety and familiarization, and is required to meet periodic proficiency standards.

I also favor allowing teachers to have the ability to carry a concealed firearm in the classroom for the defense of school children. I like the idea of extensive training in this situation, simply because it will greatly enhance the sucesses of protecting the kids.

"WHEN SECONDS COUNT THE POLICE ARE ONLY MINUTES AWAY"

The planets best, most effient, highly trained police force is of absolutely no help untill they get there, see the situation, and get to the guy(s) with the gun(s).

Training, phychological evaluation, ONLY because the schools are the place, and the ability to be willing to protect the children at all costs are necesary in this situation.:tango_face_plain:

People who are against it obviously don't care if a kid is killed by a thug.
They would prefer a police state without privately owned guns.

Well I think any teacher anywhere should be armed if they pac the gear emotionally, and get some training. Dumbass parents, and pantywaist teachers be dammed.

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. 🤔

I'll chime in here. My daughter just graduated from college, and already has a job as a high school math teacher, in Amarillo, Texas. She is not your stereotypical liberal teacher, she has her own gun, and wants to get her CPL (she was one of the few republican voters in Marquette County, Michigan during the last presidential election). She also wants to carry a gun in the classrooom, with the appropriate training.

She feels that she is there to take care of the kids, including protect them. I wish more teachers, as well as parents and administrators, felt as she does.

My response to the parent that didn't want their child to be in a classroom with a gun, are they ok with their child in a classroom that's unprotected?

Another thought, in addition to aduquate training, the training needs to be ongoing, and the armed person needs to pass a true competency test.

Just a few rambling thoughts.

Anything that deters these creeps from going to a school is the right thing to do... After a couple of these creeps get shot to heil and back They will start targeting places that are posted with no gun signs. (Preferred sign of creeps and armed thugs everywhere)...

Soft and high attrition targets that become difficult (at best) to sortie are less attractive when highly protected.

What is more sought than a Gun Free School Zone ? Thank you very much (not) for that Democrats. Absolutely no resistance. Getting the gun inside of these has become routine and customary - plus the abiding and abetting Media is always there for "If it bleeds, it leads" coverage. Not getting shot in the early stage process of killing unarmed school children has heretofore been the easy route.

Now, with the possibility of never getting off the first shot, the soft target school zones have become hardened from within, but will forever remain vulnerable just the same.

It is wondered, and the legislation wording should speak to, if Teachers are allowed to carry on school property, will that permission extend to all CCL permitted licensees and whether School Zones will retain their Gun Free status? Certainly, in the event of a lockdown for an Active Shooter, unknown CCL's on campus are as likely to be shot by Teachers and police as the bad guy(s). When the smoke clears, it will be time to sort out the good from the bad, but by then, the deeds are done.

I have often thought of that scenario. Where the good guy with the gun is shot by law enforcement or in the school after confronting the grease ball gets shot by law enforcement. Better them then the kids and I’m pretty sure most of us feel the same...

I think that Florida did the right thing. At least there will be some protection in place if an incident does occur before the cops arrive. It isn't going to happen in my state that was taken over by ultra liberals in the last election. The bill to ban teachers being armed is passed, signed , and will go into effect in July in NM. They also did the same thing with a universal background check for gun sales. I feel so comfy now, all warm and fuzzy, because I've been assured that with these laws we are now going to be safe from gun violence. Snake oil, ya'll, from the left wing idiots.

My niece is a principal in the Amarillo school district and is very pro gun as well. Maybe they will get together and get something going.

Dee - What school does your niece work at? My daughter just finished her student teaching at Crockett Middle School, and will be teaching at Tascosa High School.

Sorry for the thread drift.
