Well Tim convinced me to go to 45-120 in my BC project. So...I'm looking for any and all info that members are willing to share. Loads, places to get brass, dies and bullet molds. I would like to know bullet preference and mold preferences also as I do cast some of my own. Smokeless or BP/BPsub also. My intention is to shoot long range for fun. Just need to gather info and take advantage of the knowledge of others. Hope you don't mind.Thanks in advance to all and happy holidays to everyone.

I just finished re-chambering to 45-100 aka 2.6 Sharps because brass is 1/3 the cost of 45-120 brass and the 45-100 could be loaded almost to .458 levels - i.e. - extreme pain. If money is a consideration, you may want to try the 45-100!

The 45-100 doesn't have the shock and awe of the 45-120, cost has nothing to do with it, once the brass is bought and paid for specially, the 45-110 is close tho, in this case, bigger is better.

Yeah Tim - "Shock and Awe" that's what did it. Plus I just like to have something different.(hence the name Gary's Custom Guns). smokenjoe5150 made sense that it is cheaper to shoot the 45-90 etc. but who cares?He's building a 50 - ?? I have a 45-70 that I posted a pic of here a while back and I love it. 4.16" COL- "Bigger is Better!" Words I hope my wife never uses This is just a fun project that I will enjoy. I live in Libby, Montana 100 miles from where Jesus left his sandals. If I can't shoot in somebodies competition than they can't shoot in mine My friend has a Shilo Sharps that he has invested $5500 and when we go to shoot he will probably tell me how cool my $550 rifle is. I will most certainly admire his finely crafted rifle and we will have more fun than two teenagers skipen school to go to the local house of ill-repute. Shootin BIG rifles standin around a campfire and tellin hunting lies. I can hardly wait. Thanks for all the good info guys I'm going to order 60 pcs of brass and the dies now. Yup, every time I go to the range with the 45-120 BC, someone wants to buy one of my rounds just to have it, I've been offered up to $10 each, but I don't take their money, I think I'm down to 125 or so of the original 140 I bought up front between those I've given away there and sent to folks here that want em, the 45-90/100 would be cheaper, that's for sure!! 8)

Just ordered Lyman dies, Norma Brass (80 rounds), and a Lee SC-459-500-3R mold. I have a good supply of lead ingots so I'm off like a heard of turtles. Will slug the barrel and size/lube to fit. ;D Think I'll round off some of the square edges on the stock and strip stain and refinish it just to give it a little better fit and finish. Sights and inserts are en-route along with reamers. Project 45-120 is a go and we have lift off. Stay tuned for further developments, and range reports. - F50
P.S. - 16 oz Mercury Recoil suppressor is on the way also

Gary, I had no idea you lived in Libby. I was Division Boss on the Koocanusa Fire Complex in '94 (if I remember correctly ;D).
You're right.......it's God's country; except for the bears.....they would run us off Pipe Creek every evening!

Hey Joe - In 94 I was the finance manager at Timberline Auto. In 2003 I was elected as the Justice of the Peace for Lincoln County. Re-elected in 07. I'm trying to fill my cow tag this weekend up in the Fisher River area, just hoping the snow lasts. FWP extended permits till 12-09-07. Where do you live now? How's the 50 coming? I'm going to do this 45-120 by hand in my shop. Thanks for all your help.

Gary, I was up in the Thompson-Fisher area about 15 years ago and it's beautiful hunting country. Isn't Wolf creek part of that area, also?

I retired in Dec 2004 and am living in Kern County California (unfortunately!). We have some out of state property and will probably move out of this mess next year.
The 50 is still in the proof stage. I put some 450's and 515's through it the other day and everything works fine. I need to dress up the barrel and add open sights to it.
That 120 should be a real show stopper when you get it finished...........a 500-535 should send an elk to the happy hunting ground!
