Based on the thread “Your Idea Of The Perfect Handi Arsenal?” it is obvious that Handi-Holic-Itis is running unchecked systematically thru out this forum. I realize that I have it bad. I used to ask some of the same questions that show Handi-Holic-Itis in its early stages, like “Which caliber should I get?” Then the good Handi-Holics on this forum would give their honest opinions. When all the time the forum members with full-blown Handi-Holic-Itis know full well in the end we Handi-Holics will get a Handi in every caliber offered by H&R/New England Firearms. Some are just looking for a good reason to justify their next purchase.

This brings me to my question as a Handi-Holic with the full-blown version of Handi-Holic-Itis (which I have faced and accepted my fate).

What cartridge variations have been offered in the past (before the current 2005 catalog)? So I will know what to look for as I rummage around the dusty corners of gun shops and pawnshops to gratify my addiction to this disease.

Well ... Grampa Mike. Lets see. Hmm. They offered a .35 Whelen and 7X57 both of which I, and many others, are drooling for. Then there was the 7X64 Brenneke and the .444 Marlin. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't mind having the latter two as well.

Given that you live somewhat close to me (Virginia/Maryland), should you find more than one of these I would certainly appreciate a call. I would gladly return the favor.

I do get around a lot. Is there anything that you are seeking that I can keep an eye out for? A local shop has a couple 7-08's, a .17 and a .22 Hornet along with a couple more that I don't recall. Their prices are usuually within $20 or so of Wal Mart.

Not only will you have various calibers to keep an eye out for...but also all the different stock configurations and colors as well...some of the special orders for various distributors have been showing up too..not all of those have ever been cataloged :-D

EVOC ONE: I too would appreciate any that you find and don’t want for yourself. I have the ones that you mentioned. Will tell you of any that I find. I live in Stafford County and work at the Pentagon and Fort Belvoir, the very few gun shops in Northern Virginia seem to ask top dollar for what they have, which does not seem to include H&R/NEF firearms. Wal-Mart seems to get my business because that is all I can find. I drop into the Gander Mountain in Fredericksburg every weekend, but all they have is one 243 super light. It seems very lonely there by itself week after week, if it was the heavy barrel I would get it. Not sure if a Virginia resident may buy a gun in Maryland. I know as a Virginia resident I can’t buy anything in West Virginia. Do you know if Maryland sells to Virginia residents? Also Virginia residents may only buy one firearm every 30 days.

Was the 450 Marlin ever offered as a whole gun?

The Internet is spreading this disease, and the virus blockers seem to have no effect on it.

Add .357 Maximum to that list, it was offered as a factory caliber at one time or another..also, the .270 and .30-06 were offered in the Ultracomp compensated barrels.

How long has that been the case? I lived in WV from 1993-1998 and had friends from VA that frequently came up to hunt. They bought several firearms in WV as VA residents is this something new? I know you have to be a resident to purchase a handgun but I never heard of anything that would prevent a non-resident from buying a long gun.

I did not know that Virginians could not purchase in W.VA. I was turned down at the Martinsburg K-Mart a couple years ago. But was told that was store policy not to sell to out of state residents. But I have since been at a couple local W Va. shops and was told that with proper ID I could make a purchase.

At the Chantilly show last fall I was turned down by three Mil Surp vendors due to being a Md resident. Even after I produced a C&R license. One vendor was "kind" enough to tell me that Md laws were so controversial it wasn't worth selling to anyone from there. I'll check on Md laws regarding Va. residents.

My experiances with gun shops in the D.C suburbs are like yours ... expensive and scarce. There are some down in southern Md that are decent shops, but they also are expensive.

Fortunately I can purchase long guns in PA. They have some of the best shops. The prices are usually decent and they will often deal with you. There are some good shops still left out my way, in Md, but very few.

I will keep a lookout for the calibers you listed.

I saw a .450 Ultra in a shop near New Market, Va about six months ago. I can probably find out if its still there, my parents live down in that area. I'll get them to get me the number of the shop.

oneshotonekill: I have a friend, Terry Mulligan who owns Mulligan’s Gun Shop in Ridgeley, WV. All last year, 2004 he could NOT sell to any Virginia resident. I will call him tomorrow to see if that has changed, sure hope so.
