.223 and .243 Winchester Super Short Magnum cartridges? I read some info on the Browning web site. It didn't give alot of info other than how wonderful the new cartridges are. Was wondering about the pressure and if they would work in a Contender????

You'll never see it in the contender as the case is too big in diameter. I doubt if you'll even see it in an Encore. Every one is refusing to chamber the short mags so I can't see them chambering the super short mags either. KN

Most of the magazines have had there press release/reviews of the two cartridges. Seems like a hard sell to me. Because they are "magnums", SAAMI specs allows them to be loaded to 65,000 psi. Even at that, the .223 wssm only beats the .22-250 by about 150 to 250 fps. I'm underwhelmed.

Not to hurt any feelings BUT

Reed your quote

This is a BIG improvement in a very short amount of time from a FACTORY round.
The bullet speeds have steadly improved over years.
To a Varmit hunter this 250fps increase is BIG as they are always looking for a few more FPS.
I see no reason to downplay such an IMPROVEMENT.
Geez sounds like some still wish they built the Edsel.

Ive seen quite a few articles on the short mags. and also read quite a bit about them on the internet. From what I have seen, there are a lot of people (writers) pushing them, and a lot of people who are not impressed. Sounds like every other caliber to me . . . some love em, some hate em. No way to really know until you shoot them yourself.

Hi Thomas:

I'm not going to get into a cartridge argument, because we all have our own likes, dislikes and ideas. I guess I've just been around so long that it's hard to see the need of a new 22 magnum cartridge. But, hey, I like to see the manufacturers sell, sell, sell and that's what this is all about. I'm no great lover of the 22/250 either, but with SAAMI limits being what they are, the super-duper mag has to go to 65-68,000 psi to beat what the '250 does at 48-52,000. Wonder what the '250 would do with a 68,000-psi load?

Having seen some tests that were reported in a gun mag this month, where over 80,000 psi was demonstrated without any "noticeable" signs of overload, I wonder why the 22/250 can't be loaded at the same pressures as the .223 WSSM?? The rifles and the cases are of comparable strength.

But, I guess that's why we're not all still using the .300 Savage and the .222 Rem., right?

To show you how unqualified I am for this debate, I still think the lowly .223 will do anything that needs to be done to varmints!!!
